Earthly Branch Six Combinations in BaZi: Harmony or Dependency?

Where the Six Combinations Come From

Zi-Chou, Yin-Hai, Mao-Xu, Chen-You, Si-Shen, Wu-Wei — these six pairs of Earthly Branches are collectively known as the Six Combinations (Liu He). Many students of BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) encounter this table and reach for rote memorization, but there is an underlying logic worth understanding.

The traditional explanation comes from astronomical calendrics. The ancient Chinese mapped the twelve stations of the ecliptic onto the Earthly Branches and defined a "Six Combination" as the pair of branches where the sun and moon formed a conjunction (He Su (syzygy)) in a given month. The Zi month (the eleventh lunar month) and the Chou month (the twelfth) are adjacent and share a sun-moon meeting; Yin and Hai, though farther apart, belong to the same pairing — exact explanations vary across classical sources, but the derivation is calendrical, not arbitrary.

This origin matters because it defines the fundamental character of the Six Combinations: unlike the San He (Three Harmony) groupings, which unite branches of the same elemental nature, the Six Combinations are closer to a Yin-Yang attraction — two branches of differing character bound together by a seasonal or calendrical link.

Six Combinations Do Not Simply Mean "Good Relationships"

A popular shorthand in divination circles goes: if your BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) contains a Six Combination, you get along well with others and are easy to like. That is not entirely wrong, but it is far too broad.

The core mechanism of a Six Combination is gravitational pull — a tension that draws two branches together. How that tension manifests depends entirely on context:

  • He er bu hua (combination without transformation): The two branches combine but do not produce a new elemental quality. Take Zi-Chou: Zi is Water, Chou is Earth; their combination does not reliably transform into a single element — it simply creates a bond of mutual entanglement. In practice this often means the person becomes deeply entwined with someone or something, not necessarily in a pleasant way.
  • He er hua qi (combination with transformation): When the chart carries sufficient elemental momentum, the paired branches can genuinely transform into a new Five Elements (Wu Xing) quality. Chen-You combining into Metal is one of the more reliable examples, because You is strong native Metal and Chen contains hidden Xin Metal. Once transformation occurs, the chart's elemental balance shifts and the entire reading must be recalculated.

Folk readings often label Six Combinations as Tao Hua (peach blossom, romantic) or Gui Ren (benefactor) energy — that is a practical shorthand, not the concept itself. Whether a particular Six Combination carries romantic resonance depends on which branches are involved. The Wu-Wei combination includes Wu, which is a peach blossom branch for those born in Rat, Rabbit, Horse, or Rooster years, so a romantic undertone naturally follows; Chen-You, by contrast, leans toward wealth and seal energy and has little to do with romance.

The Pillar Position Changes Everything

Where a Six Combination sits in the chart determines which life domain it affects — something many beginners overlook.

A Six Combination spanning the Year Pillar and Month Pillar typically reflects the closeness of the family of origin or a deep early-life entanglement with clan, ancestry, or family enterprise. "Harmony" here can just as easily mean being locked into a family business as it means warmth at home.

A combination between the Month Pillar and Day Pillar is the closest to the self and has the most direct bearing on personality and near relationships. When the Day Master's adjacent branch combines with another pillar, the person tends toward strong attachment in intimate relationships or becomes intensely fixated on a particular bond. The "easily dependent" label most often derives from combinations in this position.

A Six Combination between the Day Pillar and Hour Pillar points more toward later life, children, or a deep entanglement with a subordinate or younger person in the later stages of a career.

A Six Combination appearing in a Luck Pillar or Annual Fortune is dynamic rather than structural: for a stretch of time the person becomes tightly interwoven with someone or something, but once that cycle ends and the combination dissolves, the bond loosens. It does not permanently reshape the chart, though it strengthens the relevant branches considerably while active and can make certain relationships feel nearly impossible to leave during that window.

Harmony or Dependency — It Comes Down to the Day Master's Strength

Given identical Six Combinations, one person expresses them as "ease with people and smooth collaboration" while another expresses them as "getting stuck, unable to walk away." The root difference is the state of the Day Master.

When the Day Master is strong, a Six Combination becomes an integrating force — the ability to bring together people or resources of differing natures and put them to use. These individuals often excel at mediation, team-building, or working across different personality types.

When the Day Master is weak, the gravitational pull of the combination works against it. The force that binds two branches becomes a drain on a Day Master that lacks the strength to govern it, and the person more readily sinks into a relationship, obligation, or situation they cannot easily exit. This is the primary context for the "prone to dependency" reading.

One more point worth stating plainly: if one of the two combining branches is a Ji Shen (unfavorable god) for the chart, the combination is not a good thing — it entrenches the unfavorable branch by locking it in place alongside another branch, creating a sustained drain rather than a passing problem.

So the accurate version of "Six Combinations mean harmony" is this: a Six Combination represents a deep gravitational pull between two branches. Whether that pull reads as harmony or dependency hinges on whether the Day Master is strong enough to direct it, and whether the branches involved are favorable or unfavorable to the chart. Hedging by saying "it is both" simply sidesteps the judgment that actually needs to be made.
