When BaZi Annual Fortune Combines with Wealth Stars — Does It Really Mean More Money That Year?

What Does 'Combining with Wealth' Actually Mean? Let's Clear Up the Concept

A lot of people ask this question with two different things mixed together in their minds: one is the Annual Fortune's Heavenly Stem combining with a wealth star already present in the natal chart; the other is the Annual Fortune itself bringing in a wealth star that then combines with something else in the chart. These two situations have different natures and cannot be treated the same way.

In BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny), the wealth star is the Five Elements (Wu Xing) that the Day Master controls — or more precisely, that overcomes the Day Master's element. For example, if the Day Master is Wood, then Metal is the Officer star, Water is the Seal (Yin Shen), and Earth is the wealth star. When we talk about the Annual Fortune combining with wealth, the most common scenario is: the Annual Fortune's Heavenly Stem forms one of the Ten Heavenly Stem Combinations (Tian Gan Wu He) with a wealth star in the natal chart, or the Earthly Branch Three-Harmony (San He) or Six-Harmony (Liu He) configurations involve wealth-related branches entering the chart.

Among the Heavenly Stem combinations: Jia-Ji combine into Earth, Yi-Geng combine into Metal, Bing-Xin combine into Water, Ding-Ren combine into Wood, and Wu-Gui combine into Fire. Take a Jia Wood Day Master as an example — Earth is wealth, and Ji Earth is the Zheng Cai (Direct Wealth) star. If the natal chart already contains Ji, and the Annual Fortune brings another Jia, then Jia and Ji combine. Folk tradition would say "the wealth has been locked in." But here is a key point of contention: does combining mean drawing closer, or locking things up?

Traditional destiny analysis recognizes two possible outcomes: "combining and transforming" (He Er Hua) and "combining without transformation" (He Er Bu Hua). When transformation occurs, the elemental nature changes — and the strength of the wealth star may actually diminish or shift into something else. When transformation does not occur, the two stems restrain each other, the wealth star gets entangled, and it may not flow freely. So the phrase "combining with wealth" is inherently vague — just because a combination forms does not mean money ends up in your pocket.

Whether a Wealth Combination Produces Results Comes Down to Three Things

The Day Master's strength is the prerequisite. The wealth star represents something the Day Master must "overcome" or manage. If the Day Master is weak, strong wealth becomes a burden — the person cannot carry it. At best they work hard without holding onto money; at worst, wealth brings trouble. If the Annual Fortune combines with wealth while the Luck Pillar (Da Yun) is simultaneously amplifying wealth, and the Day Master has no roots and no support, that year is likely one of "seeing opportunities but being unable to seize them" — or even one where pursuing wealth damages your health or relationships.

Whether the wealth star itself is stable at the branch level. Even if the Annual Fortune's Heavenly Stem combines with a wealth star, are the Earthly Branches secure? Branches are the roots; stems are the shoots. If the Annual Fortune stem locks in wealth but the Earthly Branches simultaneously clash or punish the wealth root, that root is unstable. What you often see in such years: money arrives quickly but leaves just as fast, or a deal looks promising but never closes.

What Ten God the other party in the combination represents. For instance, if the Annual Fortune brings Geng Metal to combine with Yi Wood — and Yi Wood is the Day Master — then Geng (an Officer star) is combining with the Day Master itself, which is an entirely different matter from "wealth being combined." To determine whether wealth is truly being combined, you must trace the specific Ten Gods involved. You cannot draw conclusions simply because "there is a combination."

There is a common misconception in folk fortune-telling: conflating "the Annual Fortune brings a wealth star" with "the Annual Fortune combines with wealth." When wealth appears directly in the Annual Fortune stem, it is a more direct influence — wealth arrives in person, so to speak. A wealth combination is an indirect relationship, with the extra step of the "combining" action in between, making it more variable.

When a Wealth Combination Year Is Relatively Favorable

If you want a rough reference for when a "wealth combination year" is more likely to produce real gains, these conditions generally apply:

  • The Day Master is moderately strong or better, or the Luck Pillar is in a Seal or Rob Wealth (Bi Jie) phase that supports the Day Master, giving it the capacity to absorb wealth
  • After the combination, the resulting element tends to "transform" into something useful — ideally, what emerges is the chart's Yong Shen (useful god / favorable element)
  • The Earthly Branches simultaneously open a wealth storage (Cai Ku) through a clash, or a Three-Harmony wealth combination solidifies — meaning wealth has both root and source
  • The natal chart's wealth stars are not already excessive; the Annual Fortune combining with wealth is "adding flowers to brocade" rather than "the straw that breaks the camel's back"

Conversely, if the natal chart is already heavy with wealth stars and the Day Master is weak, and the Annual Fortune adds another wealth combination, this is typically not a year for making money — it is a year of overwork, and may even be a year of financial loss. In a chart where wealth is abundant but the body is weak, the person is driven by money rather than driving it; wealth becomes the source of trouble.

One point worth stating separately: when the Annual Fortune combines with wealth, sometimes what is being combined is not money itself, but people or matters related to money. For men, the wealth star also represents the wife; for women, it represents the father. A wealth combination can therefore indicate movements in family relationships or matters involving elders that year — it does not necessarily show up as a number change in your bank account.

The Luck Pillar Background Matters More Than the Annual Fortune

This is something I think many people overlook. The Annual Fortune lasts only one year; the Luck Pillar governs a decade. If the Annual Fortune combines with wealth but the Luck Pillar is in Officer-Killer (Guan Sha) territory that suppresses the Day Master, the wealth foundation for that year is unstable. Flip it around: if the Luck Pillar itself is in a wealth phase, even a year where no wealth combination appears in the Annual Fortune can still bring decent returns.

Pulling out the Annual Fortune's wealth combination in isolation to judge the whole year's finances is a commonly seen narrow reading. Destiny analysis emphasizes the interplay of the year and the pillar — the Luck Pillar is the soil; the Annual Fortune is the seed. Wrong soil, and even the best seed struggles to germinate.

There is also a practical issue worth raising: many people say "my Annual Fortune this year combines with wealth," but they have not carefully verified which stem is combining with which, whether the combination involves Zheng Cai (Direct Wealth) or Pian Cai (Indirect Wealth), or whether it has truly entered the chart configuration. Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth have different natures — Direct Wealth tends toward stable income and operating earnings; Indirect Wealth relates more to windfalls, speculation, and resources from a paternal line. Which one is being combined changes the type of opportunity you might encounter.

So here is my take on the original question: an Annual Fortune wealth combination is a signal worth paying attention to, but it is not a guarantee that "this year will definitely be easier to make money." Think of it more as a prompt — wealth-related factors are activated this year, but whether that translates into actual gains depends on the Day Master's capacity, the Luck Pillar's support, and whether the wealth star itself is rooted and free from interference from other forces.
