Heavenly Stem Combinations in BaZi: One Side Initiating or Mutual Complementarity?

Where the Five Combinations Come From

For many people, the first encounter with the five Heavenly Stem combinations comes through reading about marriage and romantic affinity — "Your Day Master is Jia, the other person's Day Master is Ji; Jia and Ji combine, so this relationship is fated." That sounds poetic, but the original meaning of the five combinations goes well beyond saying whether two people have romantic chemistry.

Traditionally, the origin of the five combinations is traced to the numerical relationships of He Tu (River Chart). He Tu pairs Heaven numbers — 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 — with Earth numbers — 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 — and where these Heaven-and-Earth numbers "come together" maps onto the ten Heavenly Stems to form five pairs: Jia-Ji, Yi-Geng, Bing-Xin, Ding-Ren, and Wu-Gui. This is the foundation of the five combinations. At its core, combination represents a kind of "destination" or "归宿" Gui Su (returning to one's place) relationship, not merely emotional closeness.

The five combinations are therefore first a cosmological pairing framework, and only later did fate readers begin applying them extensively to interpersonal, romantic, and collaborative readings.

Can the "Active Party" Theory Hold Up?

A widely circulated view online claims that within each combination there is an active party and a passive party — Yang Stems initiate, Yin Stems receive. So Jia actively combines toward Ji, and Ji passively accepts.

This view has some grounding in the logic of Yin and Yang — Yang moves, Yin rests — but in actual chart reading I think it should not be applied too rigidly.

The reason is that the nature of the five Heavenly Stem combinations is inherently unequal. Take Jia-Ji as an example: Jia Wood meeting Ji Earth means that in terms of pattern analysis, Jia is the stronger party (Wood controls Earth). This combination more often reflects a state of "Jia being restrained" or "Jia actively moving toward the combination." But Ding-Ren is different. Ding Fire meets Ren Water; Water controls Fire, so Ren is the one controlling Ding. If we say "Yang Stems initiate," then Ren moving toward Ding looks less like initiating and more like Ren "absorbing" Ding.

So rather than asking who is active and who is passive, it is more useful to look at the Five Elements (Wu Xing) relationship of mutual generation and control between the two Stems — that is what determines whether the combination's nature is one of "entanglement" or "transformation."

In actual BaZi charts, there is another crucial distinction: combining without transforming versus combining and transforming. Two Stems meeting does not necessarily produce a new Five Element. Transformation has conditions, and the mainstream view is that the month branch must cooperate. For instance, Jia-Ji combining to transform into Earth requires the month branch to be in a month of Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei, or for the Earthly Branches to be strong in Earth — only then can the transformation into Earth truly occur. Without the month branch's support, Jia and Ji are simply "held together" in a lock: Jia Wood's strength is diminished, but it has not actually become Earth. This point is easy to overlook.

The Practical Effects of Stem Combinations — Case by Case

When a Heavenly Stem combination appears in a chart reading, several specific conditions must be examined:

Position. A combination between the Year Stem and the Month Stem generally affects early life fortune or the relationship with elders and the family line. A combination between the Day Stem and the Hour Stem is often used to read the spouse palace or the state of later life. A combination across the gap between the Year Stem and the Hour Stem is traditionally considered weaker — there is a symbolic presence of combining, but not necessarily a functional effect.

Relationship to the Useful God. If the Yong Shen (Useful God) is the one being combined away, this is a problematic structure. For example, if the chart relies on the official star as the Useful God and that star gets locked in a combination, career fortune tends to become unstable, or ability gets buried — opportunities always seem to fall just short. A Useful God that is combined is not rendered useless; rather, it loses its freedom. This often manifests as a person who clearly has ability but keeps getting held back, unable to land things in a concrete way.

Whether Luck Pillars or Annual Fortune trigger it. The static structures in a natal chart must be activated by Annual Fortune or Luck Pillars before they fire. For instance, if Jia and Ji are not adjacent and therefore not combining in the natal chart, but a year or a Luck Pillar brings in the intervening Stem or Branch that draws them together, that is when the combination truly "locks in" — and the opportunity for romance or partnership often arrives precisely at that step.

In emotional readings, if the Day Master and the spouse star form a combining relationship, traditional analysis does consider this a sign of deeper affinity. But note — combination does not equal harmony, and deep connection does not equal a good relationship. A star that is combined can represent two people who are bound to each other and unable to separate, or it can represent mutual drain. The overall chart pattern must be consulted before a judgment can be made.

Understanding the Five Combinations as "Complementarity"

Returning to the original question: do the five Heavenly Stem combinations represent one side initiating, or mutual complementarity?

I lean toward "complementarity" as the closer fit to the original meaning — but it cannot be understood in the modern psychological sense of a "complementary relationship." In traditional fate reading, combination is more like a magnetic force: the two Stems have a natural attraction and pull at each other, and each loses some of its independence as a result. This magnetism is bidirectional, but the strength is not necessarily equal — it depends on the inherent Five Element strength of each Stem and its position in the chart.

"Initiating" captures the idea that combination has a driving force behind it. "Complementary" captures the idea that both parties change as a result of the combination. Each framing has its emphasis, but if I had to choose the more accurate one, I would say: mutual attraction, with unequal strength.

For any specific chart, determining which Stem is restraining which requires looking at generation and control, looking at the month branch, and looking at the Luck Pillars — it cannot be settled by the single rule of "Yang Stems initiate."
