Must the Use God Come from the Original Chart?

Many seasoned students get stuck at the stage of finding the Use God. After casting the Four Pillars, they scan the Heaven Stems and Earthly Branches, struggling to find the single character that harmonizes everything. Questions then arise: Must the Use God exist within the original frame? Each school has its own emphasis, and mixing them up often leads to confusion.

First, we must distinguish what is meant by a Use God. In metaphysics, these are roughly divided into three paths: Pattern Use God, Tiao Hou Use God, and Fu Yi Use God. The rules for selecting each vary significantly.

The Pattern Use God, following the traditional view of Zi Ping BaZi, prioritizes extraction from the Yue Ling (Month Command). The Month Command acts as the total hub of Qi within one cycle, governing wealth, officials, seals, and stars; most patterns are established from here. If the Heavenly Stems cannot be pulled from the Moon Command itself, one must look for traces in the Year, Day, or Hour stems. In this school, the logic of Pattern use relies on having roots and traces within the Yuan Ju (Original Chart). Absent a character there, the pattern feels incomplete. To put it another way, the structural framework is set at birth; if the specific character isn't inside the frame, that layer of function is missing.

A Tiao Hou Use God, however, offers a different landscape. Tiao Hou governs the cold, warmth, moisture, and dryness of the structure. For instance, someone born in deep winter with a cold chart needs Fire to warm the void; or one born in blazing summer needing Water to moisten the intense Earth. If the Yuan Ju lacks even a drop of Fire or Water, and contains no Tiao Hou element, can we say no Use God exists? Many ancient methods acknowledge this need is real, even if the element waits for the Luck Pillars to arrive. This is often described as finding a Use God waiting outside the chart.

The Fu Yi Use God, meanwhile, was established to balance the waxing or waning of the Day Master. If the Chart leans heavily one way, overflowing with the same Qi, and lacks a single character to counterbalance it, we call this lacking a Fu Yi Use God. These structures have a chance of falling into a Cong Ge (From Structure). The logic of Cong Ge is to stop searching harshly for the balancing word and instead flow with the general trend of the Heavenly Stems. Once unable to enter Cong Ge, yet still lacking a balancing character, the chart faces a long period in a biased state, only awaiting the Sui Yun to bring in the Five Elements for brief harmonization.

Here lies a key dividing line: Having no Use God in the original chart is not the same as having no Favoritism or Preference (Xi Ji). Preference is an inherent tendency of Five Element interactions, while the Use God is the key character capable of turning and smoothing global Qi. A favored character may exist outside the chart, but its designation as a Yong Shen depends on the system used.

Consider a common example: Born in the Hai Month of winter with a Day Master Geng Metal. The Four Pillars are heavy with Metal and Water; the Fire is absent, and Wood is weak. Cold permeates everything. The immediate need is Fire to warm the Tiao Hou, yet the Heavenly Stems barely show a fire spark. According to the Tiao Hou logic, Fire is the Use God, but it isn't present in the original frame. In the early Luck Pillars without Fire, the pattern remained unusually cold, making events feel obstructed and the spirit clear and cool. Only when the Sui Yun arrived at Si and Wu did the Fire Qi align, bringing a period of expanded energy. The Fire wasn't there from birth; it was a meeting on the road.

Next, consider an example of Pattern Use God application: The Month Command holds a Heaven Official, but the Day Master is weak, requiring a Seal to transform and assist. However, the Seal Star in the original frame is entirely hidden or absent. In this pattern, the Official goes uncontrolled, making the pattern difficult to form cleanly. Even when future Luck Pillars bring a Seal, it merely offers a phase of temporary relief, not identical to the Pattern Use God existing from within. The foundation remains the style the Original Chart originally set.

Many are prone to one misconception: mistaking the Five Elements appearing in the Luck Pillars for the chart's original Use God. The Original Chart is the Body (Ti); the Luck is the Journey (Yun). The Body is the innate face; the Journey is the post-natural travel. What's inside the chart is capital money on hand; what's outside is a chance encounter. An encounter can help you for a while, but it isn't the root foundation you were born with.

Then there is the case of Cong Ge, which stands alone. For instance, a Day Master without its own roots, overwhelmed by Wealth Star momentum, becoming a Cong Cai (Favoring Wealth). In this moment, one no longer seeks a Fu Yi Use God; the global trend is the direction. To force the search for a Day Master nurturing word as the Use God would break the pattern. These aren't charts missing a Use God, but patterns that don't require Fur Yin in the first place.

Let's once again sort out the core differences between two schools for comparison:

One school insists the Use God must remain in the original chart. The logic is that all signals of fortune and changes in global Qi are hidden within the Four Pillars and their hidden stems; the Sui Yun merely triggers what already exists. If the Original Chart lacks that specific character, then it simply exists as a preference rather than a full Use God.

The other school accepts drawing from outside the chart, often for Tiao Hou. The need for warmth is an objective reality; if nothing inside solves it, one waits for the Age to bring in the Qi. That arriving element temporarily shoulders the role of the Use God.

These two schools are not right or wrong, but rather suited to different systems. Pattern-oriented schools lean heavily toward one, while Tiao Hou and Balance experts often use the latter.

When applying this to actual reading, check using this order:

  1. First, inspect the Yue Ling; can you extract a Pattern Use God? If so, prioritize the Original Chart.
  2. Second, examine the global cold/warmth/moisture; judge if a Tiao Hou need exists; does the Tiao character appear in the Original Chart?
  3. Third, evaluate the Day Master's waxing and waning; can you find a Fu Yi character, or does it fit Cong Ge conditions?
  4. Fourth, distinguish this character: Is it inherent to the Four Stems, or must you wait for the Age and Flow to meet it?

Understanding this layer stops you from fixating on one word's verdict. A Yuan Ju with a built-in Use God has intrinsic roots; at any moment in life, there is that Qi to rely on. With an Original Use God missing, you must wait for Sui Yun; it brings opportunity, but it isn't permanent, scattering once the luck passes.

Reading the chart is simply seeing the innate foundation and what kind of Qi you meet along the post-natural journey. Knowing what you inherently own versus what is a seasonal encounter, you naturally gain clarity between choices.
