What Is Liu Shi Jia Zi and How to Use It in BaZi

Whatever preparation you make to start reading BaZi, the first set of symbols you can't avoid is the Sixty Jia-Zi. Many people begin only hearing about a sixty-year cycle, without knowing where it comes from or why it serves as the skeleton of the entire destiny system.

To put it simply, Liu Shi Jia Zi is exactly sixty sets of combined Gan-Zhi produced by pairing Ten Heavenly Stems with Twelve Earthly Branches according to fixed Yin-Yang rules. Starting from Jia Zi, the sequence lines up until reaching Gui Hai, then looping back to the start.

First, let's break down the two fundamental parts. The Ten Stems are Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, and Geng; the Twelve Branches include Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, and continuing through Shen, You, Xu, and Hai.

There is an ancient rule passed down for matching: pair a Yang Stem with a Yang Branch, and an Yin Stem with an Yin Branch—avoiding mixed crossing.

There are exactly Ten Stems and Twelve Branches. The least common multiple of these two numbers is sixty. Only when the Heavens finish six cycles and the Earth finishes five does the pair return to the Jia Zi grouping. Thus, one full round equals exactly sixty groups, giving rise to the name Hua Jia.

Many mistakenly believe Liu Shi Jia Zi is used solely for counting years. This is the most common misconception.

Within the Gan-Zhi system, the Year can be marked by Jia Zi, but Month, Day, and Hour follow this same cycle too. We often call this the Four Pillars BaZi: the Year Pillar, Month Pillar, Day Pillar, and Hour Pillar; each pillar consists of a Liu Shi Jia Zi pair. Without these sixty-time sequence measures, the Four Pillars would make no sense.

Here is a simple example to aid understanding. Same Chinese Zodiac Tiger—Branch being Yin—yet there are five subtypes: Jia Yin, Bing Yin, Wu Yin, Geng Yin, and Ren Yin. The imagery in the Branch is close, but when paired with different Stems, the Five Elements combo and aura tendency create a difference. This explains why people of the same Zodiac sign don't look or feel identical within their destiny chart; Zodiac signs only see the Branch, while Gan-Zhi views both Stem and Branch combined.

There is another point often overlooked: Nai Yin Five Elements. Each group of Stems matches a Nai Yin rhyme, like Hai Zhong Jin (Sea-Within-Gold) or Lu Zhong Huo (Furnace Fire). Nai Yin is what ancient scholars observed about sky and earth breath, setting a distinct image for this pair. To distinguish hierarchy: when reading Zi Ping BaZi for patterns, prioritize the birth Stems and Branches' direct generation/overcoming; Nai Yin serves more as an auxiliary imagery tool. Many beginners flip the essence, focusing only on the rhyme while ignoring the primary energy of the Stem, making them drift further from their studies.

So do we need to memorize all sixty combinations at once? Actually, you don't need to force a deathly memory. In the early stage, just penetrate its rotation logic: know the Yin-Yang pairing rule, grasp the cycle's reason, and see how Year, Month, Day, and Hour pillars stem from this system. After seeing many destiny charts and more Heavenly Stems interaction, familiarity will come naturally.

The sequence cycle holds an ancient view of Heaven and Earth. The Stem moves outward, representing flowing, revealed Qi; the Branch goes inward, rooted in hidden Qi. A combined pair is static yet kinetic, surface and depth meeting. Liu Shi Jia Zi isn't just saying a sixty-year repeat occurs—it marks when the Five Elements cycle returns to the same coordinate node. Similar timing, but human circumstances rarely perfectly duplicate.

In the end, Liu Shi Jia Zi, at heart, is a symbol system for recording time's specific atmospheric field. It's a tool, not just a verdict. Understanding this foundation means seeing Year Pillars, Month Masters, and Day Masters clearer, reading Five Element progress, and finally understanding the many threads within destiny.
