Many people first encounter divination, and after hearing the phrase "Ten Charts Nine Empty", a question hangs in their mind. Does that mean out of ten charts, most end up falling through? If so, does coin casting and setting the hex still hold reference value?
First, set aside the most easily confused concept. "Ten Charts Nine Empty" isn't necessarily that divination itself is inaccurate, nor is it a deviation in Zhou Yi logic. It speaks of the image of Kong Wang appearing frequently in inquiry charts... warning the querent: many thoughts and plans themselves have a fragile foundation.
To understand this phrase, we must first grasp where Kong Wang originates.
Ten Heavenly Stems paired with Twelve Earthly Branches, every ten pairs form a Jux. Within a Jux, only ten Earthly Branches match the Stems... remaining two lack Stem attachment... this is Ju Kong. Position placed there, form visible, yet Qi mechanism unconnected... "You Wei Wu Qi". Ancients called this state Kong (Void).
But Kong never equals Misfortune. Beginners, seeing the Yong Shen meet Kong, concluding failure... too decisive. Chart logic isn't just binary right/wrong. Kong divides into True Void and False Void. Check if the Yong Shen or Ji Shen is the one empty, see if lines are quiet or moving/transforming.
Ancient divination holds a solid rule: Flourished is not empty, Moving is not empty, Nourished/Fathered is not empty. If the line itself has sufficient power, or lines elsewhere come to nourish and combine... even if seated in Jux Kong... just temporarily lurking. Until time fills it, out of the Jux, the matter still lands. This belongs to False Void... mostly delayed, eased, not completely dispersed.
Turn it around: If the line itself is weak/powerless... Heavenly Lights not supporting, still facing restriction and Month Break. This is True Void. The image of True Void... things fade slowly, ideas cool down, effort invested... hard to reach intended result. This is the spoken Kong.
Clarify True and False Void, look back at Ten Charts Nine Empty, it makes much sense. When do people want to cast the hex? Mostly when path undefined, heart wavering, expectation and anxiety intertwined. Mind unstabled, Qi inherently floating, Chart naturally easily brings out Kong Wang. Especially inquiries about unconfirmed pacts, plans not yet grounded, undefined fates between people... variables layered on variables. Today's situation is this; a few days later environment shifts... heart shifts, the Yong Shen easier to fall into Empty Place. Not the Chart deceiving people, but the matter itself lacking a grounded foundation. Here take a plain example. Someone asks if a verbal partnership will land... after casting, Yong Shen in Jux Kong, quiet and unsupported. A typical image of True Void. Subsequent development, not necessarily one person's deliberate deceit... external conditions shifting endlessly... promise delayed after delay, finally plan shelved. The Chart didn't foresee misfortune... just truthfully presented the state where the foundation was unreal.
Switch a scene: if matter is settled, details ready, multiple forces propelling... even if Yong Shen briefly meets Kong, as long as Flourished and supported... mostly Ying Qi delayed, finally still succeed. This is Jia Kong (False Void). So Ten Charts Nine Empty hides two layers of meaning. Layer one, standing from an Artistry angle: Asking undefined matters, Kong Wang probability is higher naturally... hollow matter matched with hollow images... regular law of Chart Correspondence. Layer two: logic hidden behind the Arts: Most people's expectations built on conditions not yet solidified. People habitually treat inner hope as certainty; Chart just mirrors the current substance/vacuity. Chart like a mirror... doesn't create fortune/misfortune, just reveals current state manifested.
Others curious: What looks like that "Non-Empty" hex? That hex not empty, often several conditions align: Querent's mind focused/unmixed... matter has solid backing; Chart's Yong Shen has root, not empty/broke, Nourish/Combine orderly. Void/Solid shift... chance for landing arises. Just such conditions aren't many, this is why old phrase "Ten Charts Nine Empty" spreads.
One more point worth noting: The mindset at casting directly impacts the Chart's state.Same question, heart uneasy... repeatedly casting/inquiring, mind scattered... Kong Wang more likely to recur. Divination demands Sincerity, not ethereal law... logic simple: If you don't know what heart truly wants, Chart naturally presents a wavering/Void image. Read here and understand, no need to take Ten Charts Nine Empty as a verdict... nor use it to negate Yi Xue. It's more like an alert: the viewer and querent both must stabilize the mind. See an Empty Line, don't immediately despair. Distinguish True vs False Void... scrutinize line's strength/quietness, check for Clash/Merge/Fill opportunities. If False Void, wait for timing; if True Void, understand this matter's current limits.
Yi Xue magic often lies not in giving a direct Yes/No. It helps clarify: is the current moment in "Solid" phase or "Void" phase? When Void, forcing demand is mostly futile; wait for Qi to fill, conditions complete, move with flow... then matches Chart Logic. Ten Charts Nine Empty, ultimately speaks of world having much Void, little Solid. See this layer... only then cross the Kong Wang gate.
