Sixty Jiazi: Earth, Sky, and the Logic of Roots

Metaphysics Basics November 5, 2026 Hermit Humor ~5 min read 2 views

Anyone who has touched traditional BaZi, Feng Shui, or timing will eventually meet this sequence: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao. Many see them for the first time and lump them in with Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, thinking they are all one symbol type.

Hidden within is a pattern of ancient observation regarding Heaven's turn; without understanding it, reading BaZi, directions, or seasons becomes full of bottlenecks.

Let's start with a verdict: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao belong to Earthly Branches, not Heavenly Stems.

Many just memorize the answer but don't know why there are two systems. The ancients thought simply: Sky vs Earth, Motion vs Stillness. Heavenly Stems, the outward spreading, upward-moving Qi, like a tree trunk, ruling over exposure, revelation, and change; Earthly Branches, the inward gathering, sinking below energy, like a tree root, ruling carrying, rooting, and positioning. One rules Heaven, one rules Earth; their natures differ.

Ten Heavenly Stems in total: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. It represents a flowing, dispersing Heavenly Qi. Twelve Earthly Branches, likewise: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai. Zi-Chou-Yin-Mao are the first four, followed by Chen-Si-Wu-Wei-Shen-You-Xu-Hai continuing the rotation. The Earthly Branch is where the land above sees four seasons, directions, and ten thousand things waking and growing.

Let's focus on these four Earthly Branches individually to help you taste their flavor.

Zi, the spot where Yin turns to Yang, hiding newborn Water Qi. It corresponds to the late night; after all nature has gathered to its peak, just a hint of life begins brewing. This life force is invisible, hidden deep, not popping out right away.

Chou, damp Earth. Water Qi slowly gathers, brewing like frozen earth nurturing strength inside. A stage of transition, of pregnant potential.

Yin, Yang Qi breaking the soil officially; Wood Qi moves out. Corresponding to early Spring, the dormant starts waking up, life beginning to spread outward.

Mao, Wood Qi stretching to its purest state. Smooth Yang energy, the moment vegetation shoots and energy stretches most freely.

You see, these four Earthly Branches linked together form a process from藏着 (hidden) to 发露 (revelation). This is why Earthly Branches are special: each brings its own season, direction, Five Elements, carrying a static field. Heavenly Stems differ; taken alone, they are a roaming Qi. They need the Earthly Branch as a "position" to have anywhere to land.

This is why Sixty Jiazi (Liu Yao) requires Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches paired two by two. The Stem is moving, the Branch is settling; the Stem is Qi, the Branch is Position. Without the Branch holding up, the Stem's Qi has nowhere to rest; without a Stem driving it inside, the Branch's Five Elements are a pool of still water.

Think of a very relatable modern example: imagine a city's coordinates. The Branch is the fixed neighborhood, direction, time zone; it stays there, unchanged. The Stem is the flowing people, traffic, energy moving into that district at different times. Same location, different arrival times brings different qi fields; the state presented changes naturally. This is the core logic of Stem and Branch pairing.

Here's clarifying a common misconception: the Branch isn't just the Chinese Zodiac; it pairs one-to-one with twelve animals to aid memory. Zi with Rat, Chou with Ox, Yin with Tiger, Mao with Rabbit. The Zodiac is just a handy memory tag; the Branch itself speaks of space-time and Five Elements energy fields. Don't mistake the Zodiac for the whole Branch.

Many beginners get messy later on because they couldn't sort out "Stem" from "Branch" early on. Deciding direction with Feng Shui, picking dates for timing, deconstructing Four Pillars BaZi—step one is distinguishing: Which pair points outward in visible Heavenly Stems? Which group settles into grounded Earthly Branches?

Ancient texts say, Stems rule outside, rules appearance, rules occurrence; Branches rule inside, root foundations, rule hidden depth. Often what you see on surface is the Stem; what hides behind influencing long-term trends lies within the Branches. This is why many esoteric scholars repeatly check Branch Hidden Stems.

Naturally, this symbol system is essentially a tool the ancients used to mark the turn of time and space. It records seasonal shifts, day/night swapping, recording all things from sprouting, growing, gathering, to storing. The symbols themselves don't generate power alone; they are just a frame for observing patterns. Knowing this framework helps you read the combinations inside Feng Shui or metaphysics; otherwise, all judgments are scattered words strung into incomplete logic.

Entry need not rush; master this one layer distinction first. Know Zi-Chou-Yin-Mao sits in the Earthly Branches, understand Stems move while Branches settle, Heaven and Earth Qi floating vs sinking, revealed vs hidden. Clearing this threshold opens the door for reading Sixty Jiazi, Five Elements generation, and position patterns.

Some truths are simple to puncture; just their subtle flavor needs slow tasting across different cases and times, feeling it yourself.
