Liu Yao Divination for Lawsuits: Is Guan Gui Yao or Fu Mu Yao Holding the Self Line More Favorable?

Deep Reading September 26, 2026 Hermit Humor ~4 min read 8 views

Breaking the Question Apart

When most people receive a hexagram, their first instinct is to look for "good or bad," and when a lawsuit is involved, they ask which line holding the Self Line works in their favor. That framing is already a bit off. In Liu Yao readings for legal matters, the Self Line represents the querent — what line it is tells you your current state and role, not directly whether you win or lose.

Guan Gui Yao holding the Self Line and Fu Mu Yao holding the Self Line each carry their own symbolic logic in litigation hexagrams. They need to be discussed separately.

Guan Gui Yao Holding the Self Line: A More Direct Relationship with Authority

In the Liu Yao system, the Guan Gui Yao governs lawsuits, punishment, pressure, and coercion — it also represents government offices and legal proceedings. When Guan Gui holds the Self Line, it means the querent currently has a very direct relationship with officialdom and the law. You can think of it as being in a state of "facing official action," or as being the party actively pushing the legal process forward in this dispute.

Whether this pattern is favorable comes down to two key factors:

  • The strength or weakness of the Guan Gui Yao: When Guan Gui holds the Self Line and the line is prosperous, in a criminal case or a dispute where the other party is aggressive, this often signals intense pressure and a fierce legal onslaught. But in a civil lawsuit where you are the plaintiff bringing the suit yourself, a strong Guan may actually indicate that your claims have support — the court (officialdom) is leaning more toward your side.
  • Whether the Guan Gui Yao is being overpowered: If the Day Stem or Month Stem overcomes the Self Line, then Guan Gui holding the Self Line amounts to the querent being suppressed by external forces — an unfavorable sign. If the Self Line is generated and supported by the Day and Month, Guan Gui holding the Self Line can instead represent a pattern of "borrowing the power of authority."

There is a popular saying in folk readings that Guan Gui holding the Self Line "indicates being entangled in official trouble." It sounds ominous, but it only means you are currently involved in litigation, not that you will necessarily lose. Personally, I find this saying far too sweeping. Looking only at which line holds the Self is not enough — you must also check whether it has qi (vital energy), how strong the Ying Line (representing the opposing party) is, and whether the use-god (Yong Shen) appears in the hexagram.

Fu Mu Yao Holding the Self Line: Documents and Contracts Come to the Fore

In Liu Yao, the Fu Mu Yao governs documents, contracts, certificates, legal filings, and also protection and shelter. When Fu Mu holds the Self Line in a lawsuit hexagram, there are generally two readings:

The first: your basis for winning rests in written evidence. In contract disputes, inheritance cases, or property title matters, Fu Mu holding the Self Line is a relatively positive sign — it suggests you have documentation in hand and that written evidence works in your favor.

The second: you are waiting for an "approval" or "verdict." The Fu Mu Yao also carries the meaning of waiting for and depending on a superior's decision. When it holds the Self Line, the querent may be in a passive, waiting posture — the case is hanging in the air, the ruling has not come down yet, and you are waiting for a piece of paper to decide everything.

As with Guan Gui, whether Fu Mu holding the Self Line is favorable depends on its strength and the dynamics of generation and control. If Fu Mu is prosperous and supported by the Day and Month, the documentary support behind you is strong. If Fu Mu is at rest or in decline, or worse, being overcome, then even if you feel your evidence is solid, you may find documents missing, proof being challenged, or procedural gaps emerging.

One point worth highlighting: when the case involves criminal law, the "sheltering" implication of Fu Mu holding the Self becomes more pronounced. It is sometimes read as the querent having an elder, a lawyer, or a well-connected figure mediating behind the scenes. I treat this extended interpretation with caution and would not read it that way unless other lines in the hexagram corroborate it.

Comparing the Two Side by Side

A number of references claim that "Fu Mu holding the Self is better than Guan Gui holding the Self," on the grounds that Guan Gui implies control and punishment while Fu Mu implies protection. This is an oversimplification and is particularly unreliable in lawsuit hexagrams.

Consider this scenario: you are the plaintiff, proactively suing to recover a debt. Guan Gui holds the Self and is prosperous, meaning your resolve to leverage legal force is strong; if the Ying Line (the opposing party) is weak, this hexagram can be read favorably. Swap in Fu Mu holding the Self, and you might actually be in a passive posture waiting for court procedures to move — less initiative, not more.

Flip it around: you are the defendant, and the other party comes at you with a stack of contracts and documents. Guan Gui holds the Self and is being overcome — you are under serious pressure. Fu Mu holds the Self and is prosperous — you also have documentary evidence to push back with, and the situation is not as passive as it looks.

So asking "which one is more favorable" is itself going in circles. The right question is: what trajectory does this pattern, combined with the current Month Stem and Day Stem, the strength of the Ying Line, and whether the use-god appears, actually suggest?

There is also a practical detail that often gets overlooked: identifying the correct use-god matters enormously in lawsuit hexagrams. Liu Yao tradition designates the Guan Gui Yao as the use-god for legal disputes. But if the question is "can I get my money back," the Cai Yao (Wealth Line) is what matters. The Self Line tells you your current situation; the use-god is what determines whether the matter can be resolved. Treating the Self Line as the use-god is a common beginner mistake.

Both patterns share one important commonality: whether it is Guan Gui or Fu Mu holding the Self Line, if the Self Line transforms into emptiness (Hua Kong) or extinction (Hua Jue), or is clashed and overcome by the Day Stem with no rescue, that is almost never a good sign — it means the querent's position in this lawsuit is very fragile. That deserves more attention than the question of which line holds the Self in the first place.
