In the Liu Yao system, analyzing job changes requires avoiding the pitfall of treating symbols too rigidly. Everyone tends to focus on the Self-line (Shi Yao)—the position representing 'you'—and when it moves (da dong), feel a rush of excitement: "Ah! It moved, so something must be happening!" Then, glancing at the Earthly Branches, one spots a perfect match with a neighboring star in a 'Six Harmonies' (Liu He) pairing. Instantly, the verdict is that someone has come to your door, or an internal promotion is awaiting you.
This intuition isn't entirely wrong, but it often gets the picture only halfway right, even simplifying the complex nature of 'combination' into a single meaning of 'gathering.'
First, we must determine where this 'movement' is headed. If the Self-line moves not to combine with something else, but is directly 'caught' by the Daily Branch (Ri Chen) or the Monthly Mansion (Yue Jian), this is called a 'Passive Combination' within the moving Self-scenario. Note: Simulated layout effect; visually treat as a normal paragraph. In Liu Yao, the Daily Branch is the star of the show, and the Monthly Mansion is the background stage. When the Self-line gets excited to move, only to be shackled (he ban) by the Daily Branch patriarch, it often signifies "wanting to move but not quite getting there." For instance, if you plan an interview this Wednesday but the Self-Line Zi Water moves upward, only for the Daily Branch Wu Fire to arrive, creating a clash-with-combination dynamic, or simply with the Daily Branch Chou Earth trapping the Zi Water: job changes here come passively. It's not that you wanted to jump ships; the boss suddenly dumped an urgent project on you, disrupting your original rhythm and forcing you into a new scenario.
Conversely, if the Self-line moves actively to pursue and combine with another line, this is interesting. This is the 'Active Combination' within the moving Self-scenario, often representing that you have set your heart in motion or actively approached someone/something. However, even in this setup, one must scrutinize which star you are combining with. If the Respondent-line (Ying Yao) is the one caught by your combination—which typically represents the environment, a specific role, or a new master—then the Self-Ying union is indeed a good match, indicating aligned intentions. But if the line you combine with is not the Respondent but the 'Useful God' (Yong Shen) that was originally less prominent in the chart, the outcome might not be entirely benign. In such cases, your attention gets scattered by that specific person or object, overlooking the main thread of the work itself.
Next, consider the Five Elements attributes of this 'combination,' which must be broken down for precision. Earthly Branch combination relies on Yin-Yang matching, but work demands efficiency and mastery. Sometimes the moving Self-line is dynamic Earth combining with static Metal, or dynamic Fire with static Water; here, one cannot just look at the clinginess of the 'combination' but must check if a 'nurturing' (Sheng) function accompanies it. In traditional judgment, there's a phrase called 'Moved then Combined, Transforming into Nourishment.' This means if the moving Self-line, while combining, also happens to nourish the Useful God or be nourished by it, that new opportunity is solid and substantial. If it's just combining without nurturing, or even combining with some draining effect, the new job might be successfully landed but at the cost of sacrificing your after-hours—belonging to the type of 'time gifted to the Boss.'
Another often-overlooked detail is the 'First Mover Rights' (Xian Shou Quan) between movement and stasis. Many only recognize moving lines, thinking they rule supreme. But for job changes, the Daily Branch's authority is immense. If the Self-line moves to combine with a static line, yet the Daily Branch is also static, this scenario creates an unstable feeling akin to 'floating duckweed on still water.' Here, what the Self-line combines with often represents a temporary state, a byproduct of a transition period. For example, if measuring a job change and the chart shows the Self-line moving to combine with the Monthly Mansion, your career shift is likely tied to seasonality or macro industry trends. In a summer-born chart with a Fire configuration combining, the new opportunity probably lies in mid-summer or early autumn; when Winter Water is strong and the Self-line gets grabbed by Earth, the timing for a change must wait until the Earth energy recedes.
As for locating the 'Shadow of a New Opportunity' within the chart, my personal experience suggests looking at the 'Hidden Spirit' (Fu Shen). When the Self-line moves to combine with its Palace's native position or a prominent Useful God in the chart, the 'Hidden Spirit' lying beneath often holds the true variable. Take an example: the Self-line is Wu Fire moving to lock onto Zi Water. Here, you must dig out the Hidden Spirit nourished by that Zi Water to see what it reveals. If the Hidden Spirit is a Wealth Star or Official Ghost (Guan Gui), it indicates that while the new job looks harmonious on the surface (the combination), the actual underlying interests (Hidden Spirit) are where you should focus. If the Self-line itself is strong and moves to combine with the Hidden Spirit, the new role likely comes with some 'invisible task,' a new burden you voluntarily took upon yourself.
By later years or during major cycles, the Self-line moving and meeting a combination carries stronger implications. But for short-term job changes measured in the present moment, this 'combination' word carries a hint of 'shackles.' If it combines with the Official Ghost line—which represents career and the boss—a new title or supervisor indeed arrives, a solid position. Yet remember, the Official Ghost moving easily attacks the Self; if the Self is combined tightly, it's a mixed bag: higher status but less freedom, or your old department merging with a new one where you are officially correct but have to mesh with many people. In such times, how the Daily Branch acts and the Monthly Mansion's waning/strengthening becomes the key to breaking the stalemate.
Finally, don't think of the 'Six Harmonies' as too absolute. There are also Three-Branch combinations and Six Clash setups mixing in; when these swirl, that 'combination' becomes dynamic or even brief. The Self-line moving to combine fears most encountering a 'Penetrating Beam' (Chuan Dai) or an 'Arched Spirit' (Gong Fu) hovering nearby. In such cases, though the Self moved, it didn't feel decisive or clean. For instance, if the Self-line Chen Earth moves to combine with Xu Earth, yet a Rooster Metal hides inside to penetrate Chen, this is called 'Combination with Breakage.' A job change here means talks went well, but signing the contract felt stressful, or a difficult colleague suddenly emerged in the new environment to restrain you.
So, looking back, does a moving Self-line combined really represent a new opportunity? The answer is: opportunities are there, but the definition of 'combination' must be peeled back layer by layer. Is it a passive grab by the Daily Branch forcing you into action? Or an active hunt for the Respondent line to secure a win-win? Is the new opportunity itself combining with you (managing a lot), or have you successfully combined with the new post (having fun)? These subtle nuances often hide within the Moon Mansion and Daily Branch recorded at the moment of divination. By separating and sifting the Self-line's 'movement' from that 'combination,' the truth of your career fortune becomes much clearer.
