When the Self line is Parents and it moves, and the day or month stem generates and supports it, this often suggests the querent is in a busy, laborious period — but one that can yield results. If Parents holds the Self line yet falls into emptiness (kong wang) or is being restrained, document-related matters tend to run into errors, and contracts may face delays or changes.
Siblings Holding the Self Line
The Siblings line represents peers, friends, rivals, and is also the bane of the Wife-Wealth line — Siblings restrains Wife-Wealth. The primary signal of Siblings holding the Self line is: unfavorable for wealth, prone to losses, or money being shared away.
This reading holds quite reliably for questions about finances, business, or investments. In classical interpretation, Siblings holding the Self line for a wealth question is almost a direct negative verdict. But for questions about partnerships, making friends, or situations requiring teamwork, Siblings holding the Self line is not necessarily bad — the strength of peers and collaborators falls naturally within the Siblings line's domain.
One additional situation worth noting: when Siblings holds the Self line and is strong and moving, it can sometimes indicate that the querent is competitive and unyielding in spirit. In a competitive context, that drive might be put to good use. That said, traditional folk readings tend to be conservative about Siblings holding the Self line overall, and I think that conservatism is well-founded — especially for financial questions, do not be too optimistic.
Descendants Holding the Self Line
The Descendants line represents blessings, younger generations, enjoyment, medicine, and also restrains the Officer-Ghost line. Descendants holding the Self line has long been considered one of the most auspicious holding patterns, especially for questions about illness, whether troubles will dissolve, or whether a situation can resolve smoothly.

The stronger the Descendants line holding the Self, the more it suppresses the Officer-Ghost. For job-seeking or promotion questions, a reading with Descendants holding the Self line will most likely not yield a positive outcome.
Wife-Wealth Holding the Self Line
The Wife-Wealth line represents wealth, the wife (for male querents), and tangible assets. When Wife-Wealth holds the Self line, the most direct reading is that the querent's attention is currently focused on financial matters, or that the situation itself is closely tied to money.
For questions about finances, investments, or trade, Wife-Wealth holding the Self line is a positive signal — especially when the Self line is strong and not in emptiness, suggesting that income or profit is within reach.
For questions about a parent's health or safety, Wife-Wealth holding the Self line warrants caution — Wife-Wealth restrains the Parents line, and in questions concerning parents or elders, the Wealth line holding the Self is unfavorable. This is a point many people overlook, mistakenly reading Wife-Wealth holding the Self as universally meaning "good financial luck." In practice, what is being asked matters enormously.
If Wife-Wealth holds the Self line but falls into emptiness, the chance of money actually arriving drops sharply. If it is drained or restrained by the day or month stem, wealth may be intended but never materialize.
Officer-Ghost Holding the Self Line
The Officer-Ghost line represents official position, pressure, illness (in health readings), and the husband (for female querents). Officer-Ghost holding the Self line carries a relatively complex signal and requires distinguishing the nature of the question.
For questions about career, job-seeking, or hoping for recognition from authority, Officer-Ghost holding the Self line is positive — it suggests the querent has an affinity with official position and power, or that the matter itself is tied to authority.
For questions about whether illness is present or whether trouble is weighing on you, Officer-Ghost holding the Self line is a warning sign. In classical readings, Officer-Ghost strong and moving while holding the Self line often indicates litigation, illness, or pressure bearing down on the querent.
For a female querent asking about marriage, Officer-Ghost holding the Self line represents the husband star residing in the Self — favorable for marital prospects. For a male querent asking about marriage, the relevant line to examine is Wife-Wealth; Officer-Ghost holding the Self line has little direct bearing on the marriage question.
What Else to Consider Beyond Which Relative Holds the Self Line
The relative holding the Self line sets the tone; it cannot complete the reading on its own.
The strength or weakness of the Self line matters more than the relative itself. A strong Siblings holding the Self line and an Officer-Ghost holding the Self line that has entered its tomb (ru mu) or is being restrained are vastly different situations. The former suggests the querent's side has force; the latter may mean the querent can barely sustain themselves, let alone anything else.
The Self-Response relationship cannot be ignored. The Response line (Ying Yao) represents the counterparty and the external environment. Whether the Self and Response generate or clash with each other has enormous influence on how the whole matter unfolds. Examining only the Self line in isolation is incomplete.
Moving lines introduce an entirely separate layer of judgment. When a line moves, it enters a new logic of generation and restraint through transformation, and the dynamic of the moving line's interactions can completely alter the pattern established by which relative holds the Self line.
The classical Liu Yao system has accumulated a remarkably complete body of interpretive logic. Which relative holds the Self line is the entry-level framework within that system — worth understanding clearly first. But using it as a conclusion rather than a clue is the true sign that a student has genuinely internalized the art.
