Liu Yao Divination for Academic Success: Which Is Better — Parent Yao Holding the Self Position or Officer Yao Holding the Self Position?

First, Establish the Useful God for an Academic Divination

When consulting Liu Yao about academic advancement, the Useful God (yong shen) is the Parent Yao — this is essentially consensus within the Liu Yao tradition. The Parent Yao governs documents, scholarly titles, and examinations. Both Bu Shi Zheng Zong and later masters treating exam-related readings place the Parent Yao at the center. The Self position (shi yao) represents the querent; the strength or weakness of the Useful God and its generating or clashing relationship with the Self position form the spine of the reading.

So the question "which Self position is more favorable" needs to be reframed: whichever Six Relative occupies the Self position changes the relationship between the querent and the Useful God, and that in turn reshapes the entire structural logic of the reading. The answer is not a simple better-or-worse judgment — it is a matter of following different interpretive pathways.

Parent Yao on the Self Position: Useful God and Querent as One — the Most Direct Structure

When the Parent Yao holds the Self position, the Useful God and the querent merge. Structurally, this is the most straightforward configuration for an academic reading — the matter of the examination is directly bound to the person; there is no problem of the Useful God being hidden or failing to reach the Self.

There is, however, a detail that is easily overlooked: when the Useful God holds the Self position, prospering and being unobstructed is ideal; if the day or month restrains it, or a moving line comes to clash it, the Self position itself takes the damage — which means the Useful God defeats itself. In that situation, the reading actually becomes harder to handle than when the Useful God does not hold the Self position, because there is no buffer space between a separate Useful God and the Self position.

Several additional points to watch when the Parent Yao holds the Self:

  • If the Offspring Yao (zi sun yao) fires and clashes the Self position, the Parent Yao is suppressed, the examination is obstructed — a clear unfavorable signal.
  • If the Officer Yao (guan gui yao) moves and generates the Self position, it actually provides support — Officer generates Parent, meaning the examiner or institution is helpful.
  • The relationship between the Response position (ying yao) — representing the examination result or institution — and the Self position determines whether admission ultimately comes through. If the Response clashes the Self, or the Response position is empty or broken, the outcome is discounted.

Overall, when the Parent Yao holds the Self position and is prospering without clash or harm, it is a relatively ideal configuration for an academic reading: the Useful God is well-placed, and the examination and the querent are aligned on a single line.

Officer Yao on the Self Position: Not the Useful God, But Not Inherently Unfavorable

The Officer Yao represents pressure, constraint, and authority — and also examiners and administrators. In an academic reading, the Officer Yao is not the direct Useful God, yet it is closely tied to the examination context: the examination hall itself has the structure of an official setting.

When the Officer Yao holds the Self position, the querent is in a posture of being scrutinized and evaluated — a posture that maps closely onto the examination experience. Within traditional interpretive practice, the Officer Yao on the Self position in a reading about official titles was sometimes read as a sign of "entering the official gate." In Ming and Qing dynasty readings about the imperial examinations, Officer Yao on the Self position while prospering was often interpreted as a strong indicator of passing the examinations.

The difficulty is this: with the Officer Yao on the Self position, the Five Element quality the Self carries is one of "restraint." If the chart also lacks a Parent Yao that can generate the Self — the chain of Officer generating Parent, Parent generating Self is severed — or if the Parent Yao is weak and idle, the connection between the Useful God and the Self is missing, and the reading becomes less fluid.

The worst configurations when the Officer Yao holds the Self:

  • The Parent Yao is hidden and cannot emerge; the Useful God is invisible; the examination situation is unclear.
  • The Officer Yao itself is excessively strong, with moving lines further boosting the Officer — the pressure becomes overwhelming, a sign of heavy anxiety and poor condition.
  • The Self's Officer Yao is strong while the Response position is weak — the querent carries heavy pressure but receives no response from the institution — failure is the more common outcome.

That said, if the Officer Yao on the Self is prospering, the Parent Yao in the chart is present and active and can generate the Self, or if the Wealth Yao moves to generate the Officer and the Officer in turn generates the Parent — the entire generating chain flows cleanly — the chart actually has a solid structure, and it would be wrong to dismiss it simply because Officer Yao holds the Self.

The Practical Interpretive Difference Between the Two

A direct comparison of where the interpretive emphasis falls in each case:

When the Parent Yao holds the Self, the focus is on the strength or weakness of the Self position itself, and on whether the Offspring Yao comes out to cause trouble. If the Self is prospering and the Offspring Yao is still, the basic structure is stable; next, examine the Response position to determine whether admission ultimately materializes.

When the Officer Yao holds the Self, the focus is on whether the Parent Yao is present and active in the chart and whether it can generate through to the Self position. The Parent Yao is the bridge: its strength determines whether "the examination can land on this person." Simultaneously, assess whether the Officer Yao's level of prosperity is appropriate — excessively strong is not necessarily good.

One point shared by both: regardless of which Six Relative holds the Self, if the Self position is empty, in the tomb, or at extinction, that is a major warning sign and should not be read favorably. The Self position is the querent; a powerless Self makes all other favorable conditions beside the point.

In common practice, many practitioners look first at which Six Relative the Self falls on, then at how the day and month interact with the Self position, and third at the state of the Parent Yao as the Useful God. This order is sound — the Self is the starting point, the Useful God is the goal, and the relationship between the two is the core structure of the chart.

As for "which is more favorable": my own view is that Parent Yao on the Self while prospering is structurally the cleanest, since the Useful God and the querent directly coincide and the interpretive logic is clear. But a chart with Officer Yao on the Self is not naturally at a disadvantage — traditional readings about official titles and scholarly advancement have always included the notion of the "Officer star entering the chart," and the key is still whether the overall generating-and-clashing pattern flows. Judging auspiciousness and inauspiciousness directly from the name of the Six Relative holding the Self is a shortcut that tends to lead the reading astray.
