MingJian Insights: Divining Negotiations with Plum Blossom Numerology

At the negotiation table, with a contract hanging in the balance, your boss asks you to use Mei Hua Yi Shu to see if it will pass. In this urgent setting, casting hexagrams relies on the element of "speed," making time-casting the most accurate method. Mention any time; you might even ignore the date and look only at the hour. The resulting image reveals the current energy field.

Unlike divining weather or illness, Mei Hua Yi Shu negotiations don't focus strictly on auspiciousness but rather on the "trend." This trend is defined by the generative relationship between the Body (Ti) and the Use (Yong), as well as the variables introduced by the moving line.

To determine if a consensus can be reached, first identify who represents the "Body" and who represents the "Use." The Body is self, and the Use is the matter at hand. In practice, defining the Body invites debate. One school posits the caster as the Body, representing your side; another views the querent as the Body, representing the client or opponent. Both work, yet they often yield opposing results. Personally, I treat the "Body" as the seat of "initiative." If the Body controls the Use (Ti Ke Yong), you have the leverage to impose your will. If the Use nourishes the Body (Yong Sheng Ti), the opponent shows initiative, making success likely. If the Body nourishes the Use (Ti Sheng Yong), you are paying the price, potentially even losing money to settle things.

Analyzing the Body and Use isn't enough; you must examine the Moving Line. This is the hexagram's "variable." Negotiations fear variables; a massive shift can hang an entire deal in the balance. If the Body is Wood and a Fire line moves within it, Fire burning Wood is known as "Competitors Fighting for Wealth" (Bi Jie Zheng Cai). It signals a rival entering the fray or the other party suddenly changing their price strategy. Here, even if the surface shows generative harmony, the destruction from the moving line cancels out the good omens.

Then there is the Changed Hexagram. After the moving line shifts, what new trigram emerges determines the finale. For instance, if the original hexagram is "Fire/Water Completeness" (Ji Ji), with a harmonious Body-Use relationship, it looks promising. However, if the moving line transforms it into "Fire/Water Incompleteness" (Wei Ji), where Water clashes with Fire, that's a classic "lion's head and snake's tail." Intense talks at first, crumbling only at the final detail. With such an image, I'd suggest walking away; further talks may be pointless.

There is also a folk method: "Analyzing Position." When casting, if the image yields the Five Elements corresponding to your office direction, that's auspicious. If it yields the opponent's office element, that's also good. For example, if you are from the East and Wood appears in the hexagram, or from the North with Water present. This is called "Roots in the Hexagram" (Gua You Gen), meaning the other party recognizes your position or can be found on their turf. If the image is dominated by the opponent's element while yours leaves no trace, you haven't got the upper hand, forcing you into a subordinate role and raising the difficulty coefficient.

Many casters see a flood of supportive elements for themselves and assume victory, only to hit walls in negotiations. This is the trap of "Auspiciousness Ignoring the Big Deal." Sometimes the Five Elements seem to nourish the Body, suggesting smooth sailing, but the opponent is a seasoned veteran who refuses to be coddled. Here, Mei Hua Yi Shu offers probability, not specific scripts. If the image shows "Body controlling Use," adopt a fierce posture, leaving no inch; if it shows "Use nurturing the Body," humble yourself to give the other side face. The hexagram is a mirror of mindset, not a scripted destiny.

Additionally, beware of the generativity in "Golden Mouth Decree" (Jin Kou Jue) principles. Although Mei Hua Yi Shu emphasizes Body and Use, combining it with the "Golden Mouth" casting method to analyze the Four Pillars (Year, Month, Day, Hour) elements yields greater precision. If the Year Stem controls the Day Stem, resistance looms, likely from a senior or elder. If the Seasonal Branch "combines" (He) your Body element, it's called an "Absolute State," meaning even with a pretty hexagram sign, a delay is wise before signing.

Then there is the matter of "Timing" (Ying Qi). When does it finally resolve? If the Body and Use nurture each other but the timing is in Void (Kong Wang), the deal talks well but stays undecided for ages. If the Body controls the Use and the timing features a Combined Pattern, success is certain, but the process will exhaust everyone; expect multiple rounds of maneuvering. Knowing it will succeed isn't enough; you must pinpoint the moment to arrange your workflow.

Personally, I don't recommend betting your entire negotiation on Mei Hua Yi Shu alone. It's like stock trading: a matter of probability. You cast a "Body controlling Use," and the other party goes bankrupt instantly; your accuracy matters less. For negotiations, the hexagram is merely an auxiliary reference. If the image shows "Body nourishing the Use," don't force the deal with a great man waiting for you; you'll lose both the wife and the army. The hexagram tells you the current energy field is off-balance, prompting strategy adjustments rather than forcing a gamble.

Finally, beware of worshipping the "Sixfold Harmony" (Liu He) hexagram. Many assume it means signing a contract, but often it signifies an entangled relationship. You talk all day and end up standing still. If the image features "Red Sparrow" (Zhu Que) or "White Tiger" (Bai Hu), expect communication clashes or a stubborn opponent. When faced with this, don't insist; withdraw if needed. As long as the Green Mountain stands, you have fuel to burn.
