Many people learning Plum Blossom Numerology (Meihua Yishu) panic when they see a changing hexagram overcome the body hexagram — they assume whatever they asked about is finished. That reaction is understandable, but jumping straight to that conclusion skips several steps.

The basic structure of Plum Blossom Numerology (Meihua Yishu) is this: a hexagram is divided into the body hexagram (Ti Gua) and the use hexagram (Yong Gua). The body hexagram represents the person consulting the oracle or the subject of the inquiry; the use hexagram represents the object of the question, the situation, or the opposing party. The generation and overcoming between body and use is the core of the reading's auspicious or inauspicious nature.

The changing hexagram comes from the transformation of moving lines in the original hexagram. Specifically, among the six lines of a hexagram, when there are moving lines, those lines transform and the original hexagram becomes another hexagram — that "other hexagram" is the changing hexagram. Traditionally, the changing hexagram is understood as "the outcome of how things develop" or "the subsequent direction of events."

A changing hexagram overcoming the body means that the Five Elements (Wu Xing) attribute of this transformed hexagram restrains the Five Elements (Wu Xing) of the body hexagram. For example, if the body hexagram is Kun (earth) and the changing hexagram is Kan (water), water overcomes earth — that is a changing hexagram overcoming the body.

But there is a detail that is frequently overlooked: overcoming has degrees of strength. Even when overcoming is present, the difference between a vigorous overcome and a weak one is enormous. Whether the changing hexagram's Five Elements (Wu Xing) are in season is the prerequisite for judging how much power that overcoming carries.

Looking Only at the Changing Hexagram Overcoming the Body Is Not Enough

Shao Kangjie (Shao Yong), in his discussions of Plum Blossom Numerology (Meihua Yishu), always emphasized "body, use, mutual, changing — generation and overcoming in all its transformations." He never looked at just one layer. The complete chain of judgment runs roughly as follows:

The first layer is the generation and overcoming between body and use in the original hexagram — if the use hexagram generates the body, there is present support; if the body hexagram overcomes the use, the questioner holds the initiative; if use overcomes body, there is pressure; if body overcomes use, the questioner can suppress the opposing party.

The second layer is the nuclear hexagram (Hu Gua). The nuclear hexagram is formed by taking lines 2-3-4 as the lower trigram and lines 3-4-5 as the upper trigram to compose a new hexagram. The nuclear hexagram represents the state of the middle process of the matter — roughly "in-progress" information. If the nuclear hexagram generates the body, the process is going smoothly; if the nuclear hexagram also overcomes the body, problems start to compound.

The third layer is the changing hexagram, representing the result or conclusion. A changing hexagram overcoming the body means that as things reach the end, the outcome is unfavorable for the body hexagram.

But these three layers must be read together. If the original hexagram's use generates the body, the nuclear hexagram generates the body, and only the changing hexagram overcomes the body, the result is not necessarily "total failure" — it is more likely "some loss in the end" or "the result falls short of expectations." Only when all three layers overcome the body do you have a relatively clear omen of misfortune.

There is another point that is easily overlooked: the generation and overcoming of the moving line itself. Whether the moving line overcomes or generates the body hexagram makes a difference even when the final changing hexagram overcomes the body. The moving line is the trigger point of change, and its nature directly affects the direction of that change.

The Situations Where a Changing Hexagram Overcoming the Body Is Truly Dangerous

In my own understanding, the following situations are the ones that can be called relatively certain misfortune:

All three layers overcome simultaneously: The original hexagram's use overcomes the body, the nuclear hexagram also overcomes the body, and the changing hexagram still overcomes the body — three consecutive hexagrams pressuring the body hexagram. This can basically be read as the matter being difficult to accomplish, or the questioner suffering losses.

The changing hexagram's Five Elements (Wu Xing) are flourishing and timely: For example, if the question is asked in winter and the changing hexagram happens to be Kan (water), water is in season and its overcoming force is extremely strong. In summer, Kan water would be in a state of rest and imprisonment, and the overcoming force would be much weaker — not necessarily capable of harming the body.

The body hexagram is itself weak: If the body hexagram is in a state of imprisonment or death within the Five Elements (Wu Xing), and is then overcome by the changing hexagram, this is "a weak party being overcome" — the harm is far greater than "a strong party being overcome."

The moving line also overcomes the body: The moving line overcomes the body, and the changing hexagram also overcomes the body — from start to finish things are unfavorable, with only the nuclear hexagram to check whether there is any buffer in between.

Conversely, if the body hexagram is flourishing, the original hexagram's use generates the body or is neutral, and the nuclear hexagram generates the body, then even with only the changing hexagram overcoming the body, that overcoming is more like "the process goes smoothly but a price must be paid at the end," or "the matter succeeds but brings subsequent trouble." You cannot cut-and-dry call it failure.

How to Apply This Logic When Actually Casting a Hexagram

A concrete example to illustrate the process. Suppose you are asking about a business negotiation and the original hexagram cast is Ze Tian Guai (Hexagram 43, Lake over Heaven), with the moving line at the ninth position of the fifth line, and the changing hexagram becomes Ze Feng Da Guo (Hexagram 28, Lake over Wind).

First, determine body and use: the questioner occupies the lower trigram Qian (Heaven), so the body hexagram is Qian (metal); the upper trigram Dui (Lake) is also metal, so the use hexagram is Dui (metal). Body and use share the same Five Elements (Wu Xing) — no clear overcoming relationship at this layer, call it neutral.

Next, take the nuclear hexagram: lines 2-3-4 form Qian, lines 3-4-5 form Qian — the nuclear hexagram is Qian Wei Tian (Hexagram 1, all Heaven). Pure Qian. The body hexagram is Qian, the nuclear hexagram is also Qian — the nuclear hexagram generates the body (or body generates itself), meaning the middle process is favorable to the questioner.

Changing hexagram Da Guo: the upper and lower trigrams are both Xun (Wind), whose Five Elements (Wu Xing) is wood. Qian metal versus Xun wood? Note carefully: metal overcomes wood, not wood overcomes metal. So the changing hexagram is actually in the direction of body overcoming use hexagram — this is actually a positive signal for the final outcome, and there is no issue of the changing hexagram overcoming the body.

This example shows that for a changing hexagram to overcome the body, you first need to calculate the Five Elements (Wu Xing) correctly — if you get the direction wrong, the entire conclusion is wrong.

If the body hexagram in the same scenario were instead Kun (earth) in the lower position, and the changing hexagram came out as Zhen (Thunder, wood), wood overcomes earth — that would be a genuine changing hexagram overcoming the body. At that point you would examine the vigor or weakness of Zhen's wood, combine it with the original hexagram and nuclear hexagram for a comprehensive judgment, and not simply call it failure upon seeing "wood overcomes earth."

The entire judgment logic of Plum Blossom Numerology (Meihua Yishu) is a process of layering information one level at a time. The changing hexagram is only the final layer. Pulling it out alone to declare auspicious or inauspicious is an easy path to misreading.
