In human affairs, Dui represents the youngest daughter, speech and argument, and joy — and it connects to language, negotiation, and material goods. The saying "Dui is the mouth" (Dui wei kou) appears frequently in classical commentaries. Visually, a lake is a low-lying body that holds water — it suggests gathering and contentment, but the surface is shallow, so Dui sometimes hints that a matter is staying on the surface rather than going deep.

Li Gua has the image of fire, belongs to Fire in the Five Elements (Wu Xing), is associated with the South, and corresponds to summer. Its organ correspondences are the heart, eyes, and blood vessels. In human affairs it represents the middle daughter, documents, brightness, and talent — it also touches on legal paperwork and public matters. Fire rises and spreads outward; it is active, visible, and fast-acting. When Li Gua appears in a reading, it generally suggests that a matter has already surfaced or is about to — it is very hard to contain.

The Five Elements (Wu Xing) relationship between the two: Fire overcomes Metal. This point is critical in Plum Blossom Numerology (Meihua Yishu) interpretation, and we will address it directly below.

The Position of Body Trigram and Use Trigram Determines the Direction of the Reading

The body trigram represents the querent's own condition; the use trigram represents the matter being asked about or the other party. This distinction is not fixed — in Shao Yong's original text the explanation is that within a hexagram the still part is the body and the moving part is the use; some methods also assign body and use based on the time of casting. The specific approach varies by school, and the explanation here follows the most common upper/lower trigram method.

If Dui is the body trigram and Li is the use trigram: Li Fire overcomes Dui Metal — the body is overcome. This is unfavorable to the querent. The situation moves toward external pressure bearing down on the self; the querent is in a reactive, constrained position, and the matter being asked about involves drain or obstruction. Disputes over words and speech are relatively likely here, because Dui rules the mouth, and when fire scorches it, speech easily gets out of control or invites attack.

If Li is the body trigram and Dui is the use trigram: Li Fire overcomes Dui Metal — the body overcomes the use. This favors the querent: your own energy suppresses the other side, and initiative rests with you. But be aware that when Dui Metal is overcome too heavily, it can mean the other party has completely lost their bargaining position; matters concluded under these conditions tend to end on one party's terms, which can create hidden complications down the road.

So the same two trigrams appearing together produce nearly opposite conclusions depending on which holds the body position. This is what makes Plum Blossom Numerology (Meihua Yishu) fundamentally different from simply looking up trigram meanings in a dictionary — the symbolism is the foundation, but the body/use dynamic of mutual production and overcoming is the core logic for determining auspiciousness.

Asking about relationships or interpersonal matters

Dui carries joy and the mouth; Li carries the heart and documents. When both appear together, the most direct image is "words that move the heart" — outwardly there is warm, expressive language, and inwardly there is genuine feeling. But the underlying dynamic of Fire overcoming Metal is still present, meaning one party is draining the other, or one person is clearly the initiator and the other the receiver; true equality is difficult to sustain.

If the question concerns an argument or falling-out, Dui rules speech and Li rules documents and public exposure; with both present and Fire overcoming Metal, the folk interpretation tends toward: this dispute will not resolve quietly, and may spread outward or leave a written record.

Asking about career and negotiation

Dui brings wealth and speech; Li brings talent and documentation. In career questions this combination traditionally carries the image of "using eloquence and talent to compete for resources." When Li overcomes Dui, reputation, prestige, and public performance (Li's qualities) will outweigh pure financial calculation (Dui's qualities) — put plainly: in this matter, credibility is more persuasive than price.

Conversely, when Dui is the body trigram and is being overcome, you are likely in a subordinate negotiating position; it is better not to name your number first — observe the situation before acting.

Asking about health

Dui corresponds to the lungs and mouth; Li corresponds to the heart and eyes. When both appear with the Five Elements (Wu Xing) dynamic of mutual overcoming, traditional practice calls for attention to the relationship between the lungs (or mouth and throat) and excess heart fire — for example, coordination between heart and lung function, or chronic throat discomfort stemming from sustained stress. These ideas belong to the realm of traditional culture; I personally think they should serve only as reference and cannot replace actual medical diagnosis.

Common Mistakes When Reading in Practice

Many beginners receive two trigrams and simply stack their meanings, producing a conclusion that lands nowhere. For example: "Dui is happiness; Li is documents; therefore there will be a joyful document." On the surface that is not wrong, but it ignores the Five Elements (Wu Xing) dynamic of mutual overcoming, and in practice the accuracy rate is very low.

Plum Blossom Numerology (Meihua Yishu) also has the layers of the nuclear hexagram (hu gua) and the changing hexagram (bian gua). Dui and Li under different changing-line conditions may produce a nuclear hexagram that shifts the overall configuration. For example, if the moving line in the cast hexagram falls in a water position, Metal and Water producing each other would then restrain Li Fire, and the situation becomes considerably more complex than a simple body/use reading. Shao Kang-jie writes in the Plum Blossom Numerology (Meihua Yishu): "when the body overcomes the use it is auspicious; when the use overcomes the body it is inauspicious" — this is the basic principle, but he also emphasizes looking at "getting the season." A trigram in the season that corresponds to its peak gains strength; the degree to which it is overcome will vary. Li Gua cast in a summer month is inherently strong; in a winter month it is weak. The dimension of seasonal timing should not be overlooked.

Additionally, Dui Gua carries an image of "breaking and diminishing," and when classical practitioners encountered Dui in the use-trigram position they would sometimes associate it with an unstable or even impaired condition on the part of the other party or subject. This reading is debatable — I think interpreting Dui as "diminishment" is largely an over-extension of the trigram's imagery. The fundamental meaning of Dui as joyful contentment is more essential; "diminishment" applies usefully only for specific question types (such as asking about injury or physical objects) and should not be generalized across all inquiry types.
