What Is a Cusp in Astrology?
The Meaning of a Cusp
A cusp is a dividing point in an astrology chart. The word is used in two common ways: a sign cusp is the boundary between two zodiac signs, while a house cusp is the degree where a house begins.
A cusp is not a planet. It is closer to a boundary on a map: it tells you where one symbolic territory ends and another begins.
What a House Cusp Is
Every house starts at its cusp. The 1st-house cusp is the Ascendant, the 4th is the Imum Coeli, the 7th is the Descendant, and the 10th is the Midheaven. These four angular cusps are especially important for identity, home and roots, partnership, and public role.
When a planet is close to a house cusp, many astrologers read it as connecting the concerns of the adjacent houses. The closer it is to the boundary, the stronger that transitional reading becomes. Different house systems can calculate cusps differently, so an accurate birth time matters.
What a Sign Cusp Is
People born near the dates when the Sun changes signs are often described as born “on the cusp.” Their Sun is genuinely close to 0° or the final degree of a sign, but that does not mean the Sun is in both signs. The Sun occupies one exact longitude, so it belongs to one sign.
The feeling of being “like both signs” usually comes from the rest of the chart: the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Ascendant, or other planets may be in the neighboring sign, and aspects or house placements can repeat that theme. Those factors can create a blended expression, but they do not make the Sun cross the boundary.
Why There Is No Universal Cusp Degree
The exact moment of a sign change differs each year and depends on the time zone used. The Sun moves roughly one degree per day, so people born near a change can have a Sun within a degree or two of the boundary, but astrologers do not agree on one fixed cusp range.
To know whether a Sun is near a cusp, calculate the chart with the birth date, time, and place and read the Sun’s exact degree. Date-only tables are not precise enough.
How to Read a Cusp
- Confirm the Sun’s exact sign and degree.
- Measure how close it is to the neighboring sign boundary.
- Check whether the Ascendant, Moon, or other planets are in the neighboring sign.
- Add the relevant house cusps to see where those meanings show up in life.
