The 12 Houses in Astrology

What the Houses Mean

Houses are the stages on which a birth chart happens. Signs describe style, planets describe energy, and houses show the life area where that energy operates. The ascendant begins the 1st house, and the remaining houses continue counterclockwise around the wheel.

A useful reading does not stop at one keyword. Look for four things: planets in the house, the sign on the house cusp, the house ruler’s condition, and any transits that activate that area.

Angular, Succedent, and Cadent

The 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses are angular and tend to act visibly. The 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th are succedent and support continuity. The 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th are cadent and favor learning, adjustment, and reflection. None of these groups is inherently good or bad.

Why House Systems Differ

Placidus, whole sign, Porphyry, and equal house systems divide the chart differently. A planet can therefore fall in a different house depending on the method. Placidus is common in modern Western astrology; whole sign is common in classical practice and simpler modern readings. Stay consistent when comparing charts.
