Liu Yao Wealth Divination: What Is the Difference Between Wealth Yao Holding the Self Yao and Wealth Yao Generating the Self Yao?

Wealth Yao Holding the Self Yao: Wealth Is Already in Your Hands

When casting a Liu Yao hexagram to divine for wealth, the first thing to do is locate which line the Self Yao (Shi Yao) falls on, then identify its Six Relatives (Liu Qin) classification. If the Self Yao itself is the Wealth Yao, this is called "Wealth Yao holding the Self Yao" (Cai Yao Chi Shi).

"Holding" means "holding steady at the Self position." The Wealth Yao sits directly on the Self Yao's line, and symbolically, wealth is attached to the querent's own person. In classical Liu Yao, this pattern is generally regarded as a positive sign for wealth-seeking — the wealth does not need to be pursued externally; to some degree it is already bound to the querent.

One important caveat: holding the Self Yao only tells you that the Wealth Yao and the Self Yao coincide. It does not mean the Wealth Yao is necessarily strong and vital. If the Wealth Yao holds the Self Yao but is simultaneously month-broken (Yue Po), day-clashed (Ri Chong), void (Kong Wang), or drained and clashed by a moving line in the hexagram, then this holding position is hollow. Wealth appears to be in hand, but it has no root — which can actually cause misreading the pattern as favorable.

The correct approach is to treat Wealth Yao holding the Self Yao as a baseline condition, then continue to examine the Wealth Yao's strength or weakness, whether it is moving or still, and whether anything in the hexagram is clashing the Self Yao. When the Wealth Yao holds the Self Yao and is prosperous (Wang Xiang), wealth-seeking is broadly smooth. When it holds the Self Yao yet is weak and under clash, money tends to be hard to secure — or gained and then lost.

Wealth Yao Generating the Self Yao: Wealth Is Outside, but Willing to Come

The pattern of Wealth Yao generating the Self Yao (Cai Yao Sheng Shi) is somewhat more complex. "Generating the Self" means the Wealth Yao moves in the hexagram or, through its Five Elements (Wu Xing) relationship, produces and supports the Self Yao — not that the Wealth Yao is sitting on the Self Yao's line.

In terms of Five Elements (Wu Xing) production and restraint: if the Self Yao is Metal and the Wealth Yao in the hexagram is Earth, Earth produces Metal, so the Wealth Yao's energy flows toward the Self Yao — this constitutes a "generating" relationship. A moving line generating the Self Yao acts more directly than a still line doing so; a still line carries only a latent potential that needs a current-year or current-month trigger to activate.

The symbolic meaning of "generating" is: wealth does not directly belong to the querent, but it is flowing in the querent's direction — someone or something is channeling a source of income toward them. In wealth divination, this typically corresponds to external opportunities, a benefactor bringing profit, or a collaborative venture distributing returns, rather than money already in the querent's own possession.

Compared with holding, a generating pattern usually requires an extra step: the wealth path has to travel a bend, relying on external conditions to cooperate. When the question is "can this money reach me?", Wealth Yao generating the Self Yao answers: "The direction is right, but the journey still needs to be walked."

Comparing the Two Patterns Side by Side

Simply put, holding the Self Yao means the Wealth Yao attaches directly to you; generating the Self Yao means the Wealth Yao is moving toward you. One is present tense; the other leans more toward progressive or future tense.

A few specific points worth noting in practical readings:

  • Timing differs. When Wealth Yao holds the Self Yao and is prosperous, wealth-seeking tends to move quickly — sometimes showing results within the day or the ten-day period (Xun). When Wealth Yao generates the Self Yao, the wealth path is in motion but has not yet arrived; allow an extra month or even an extra season.
  • Initiative differs. In a holding pattern, the querent is themselves the carrier of wealth, so taking active initiative works well. In a generating pattern, wealth arrives from outside, so reaching too aggressively tends to backfire — waiting and relying on others is more effective.
  • Sensitivity to unfavorable lines (Ji Shen) differs. When Wealth Yao holds the Self Yao, the main fears are the Officer/Ghost Yao (Guan Gui Yao) moving to clash the Self, or the Sibling Yao (Xiong Di Yao) moving to drain the Wealth. When Wealth Yao generates the Self Yao, the main fears are the Wealth Yao itself being clashed or drained — cutting off the generating channel — or the Wealth Yao entering a tomb (Ru Mu) and moving without strength.

There is also a common scenario in folk readings: the Wealth Yao both holds the Self Yao and is supported by a moving line generating it — a double positive. Tradition regards this as quite favorable for wealth-seeking. Even so, one must not be complacent; the timing and the strength or weakness of the useful god (Yong Shen) still need to be read in full.

Where People Commonly Get Confused

One type of hexagram often causes confusion: the Wealth Yao is on a line adjacent to the Self Yao's line, and by Five Elements (Wu Xing) relationship it also happens to generate the Self Yao — making it look like both patterns apply simultaneously. In fact, the two concepts do not stack. Holding the Self Yao refers exclusively to the two lines coinciding in position; generating the Self Yao refers exclusively to the Five Elements (Wu Xing) productive relationship. They operate on separate logical levels. Both can be present in the same hexagram, but they must be read separately — do not merge them into a single grand concept.

Some also ask: is Wealth Yao generating the Self Yao better than Wealth Yao holding the Self Yao? That question frames things the wrong way. Which is better depends not on the pattern itself, but on whether the Wealth Yao is strong, whether it is being clashed, and whether the timing aligns. A Wealth Yao that holds the Self Yao on a void day is weaker than a Wealth Yao that generates the Self Yao while prospering in the month's energy (Yue Ling).

In Liu Yao wealth readings, the framework is Six Relatives production and restraint, the core is strength-weakness and moving-stillness, and pattern recognition is only the first step through the door. Both Wealth Yao holding the Self Yao and Wealth Yao generating the Self Yao point in the right direction — but there is still a road to walk after you identify the direction.
