What Happens When the Useful God Is Merged
When reading a Liu Yao chart for relationship reconciliation, the first task after casting is locating the useful god (Yong Shen). In a relationship reading, the Wife-Wealth line (Qi Cai) represents the other party when a man asks, and the Officer-Ghost line (Guan Gui) represents the other party when a woman asks. Once the useful god is found, you examine its strength, whether it is active or still, and whether it suffers any clashes, punishments, harms, or destructions — these are the basics.
One situation trips many readers up: the useful god is not moving, has not been clashed or harmed, appears to be in reasonable shape — yet another line has "merged" it.
In Liu Yao, merging (He) comes in two forms. The first is the Earthly Branch Six Harmonies: Zi-Chou, Yin-Hai, Mao-Xu, Chen-You, Si-Shen, and Wu-Wei. The second is a merge formed between a line and the Day Stem or Month Builder. Which line has merged the useful god, and whether the nature of that merge is a "binding merge" (He Jian) or a "transforming merge" (He Hua), makes a significant difference in interpretation.
The fundamental reading: when the useful god is merged, its attention and capacity for movement are held by the merging line, and it cannot come to you. In the context of reconciliation, this means the other person's heart or physical circumstances are entangled with something else, leaving them unable to respond to you.
The Identity of the Merging God Determines the Outcome
The line that holds the useful god in a merge is called the "merging god" (He Shen). Its Six Relative (Liu Qin) identity is the key to reading the outcome.
When the merging god is an Officer-Ghost or Wife-Wealth line (i.e., another opposite-sex line): this is the most direct signal in a relationship reading — there is someone else in the picture. If the merging god is prosperous and strong, that connection is still alive. If it is resting, imprisoned, or entering its tomb, that connection is declining but has not cleanly ended. Reconciliation under these conditions is difficult — not impossible, but the initiative is not yours.
When the merging god is a Children-Completion line (Zi Sun): Children lines restrain the Officer-Ghost line and are inherently unfavorable for romantic matters. A Children line merging the Officer-Ghost (when a woman is the querent) suggests the other party is absorbed in personal pleasures, leisure, or their own emotional state and is not taking the relationship seriously. When the Wife-Wealth line is merged by a Children line for a male querent, the other party may be preoccupied with children or family responsibilities.
When the merging god is a Parents line (Fu Mu): Parents lines govern documents, obligations, and pressure. This configuration often means the other party is held back by practical realities — work pressure, family resistance, a contract, or a commitment they are weighing. The desire to reconcile may be there; what is missing is the freedom to act on it. Of the scenarios described here, this is relatively the most forgiving.
When the merging god is a Siblings line (Xiong Di): Siblings lines erode the Wife-Wealth and represent dispersal in emotional matters. A Siblings line merging the Wife-Wealth suggests someone in the other party's circle may be interfering or influencing their judgment.
Looking at the Six Relative identity alone is not enough. You also need to check whether the merging god itself is moving. A still merging god holding the useful god is described as "bound without leaving" — the useful god is pulled, but there is still some room for things to change. A merging god that fires and actively comes to merge the useful god carries more force; the depth of entanglement increases and the chance of reversal falls.
Several Situations That Are Easy to Misread
Day Stem merging the useful god: Many readers see the Day Stem and the useful god sharing a harmonious Earthly Branch and immediately conclude: "merged away, no hope." That judgment is too fast. A Day Stem merge on the useful god can function as the Day Stem "activating" it, giving the useful god some movement on that particular day rather than trapping it. The distinction to make: is the useful god itself prosperous? If the useful god is prosperous and the Day Stem merges it, read it as contact or a response that day. If the useful god is resting or imprisoned, the Day Stem merge is closer to the image of something stuck and unable to move.
Useful god both merged and clashed: This is an interesting combination. A useful god that is merged by one line but clashed (Chong) by another is described as "clash-opening the merge" (Chong Kai He) — the restraining effect of the merging god is broken, and the useful god regains freedom. In other words, the factor that was entangling the other party has been disrupted by a new development. Once the merge is opened, what matters is the state of the useful god itself.
Month Builder merging the useful god: The Month Builder carries more staying power than the Day Stem. A Month Builder merge on the useful god tends to sustain the entanglement for a considerable stretch — not something that resolves in a few days. If the question is "can we reconcile this month," a Month Builder merge on the useful god gives a fairly direct answer: this month is very unlikely; wait until the Month Builder changes and reassess.
Useful god transforming through a merge: When the useful god itself fires and the resulting transformation line forms a merge with another line, this is called "useful god transforming into a merge" (Yong Shen Hua He). This is different in nature from being passively merged by another line — here the other party is actively moving toward a different relationship or attachment. An active transformation is generally harder to reverse than a passive merge because the inclination comes from within the other person, not from an external force.
Can Reconciliation Still Happen? Check These Additional Conditions
A merged useful god is a clear obstacle signal, not a final verdict. Whether reconciliation remains possible depends on several additional factors:
State of the Self line (Shi Yao): The Self line represents the querent. A prosperous, active Self line means the querent carries energy to initiate; a Self line that is being clashed, entering its tomb, or resting points to low momentum on the querent's side as well, making it harder for either party to start moving.
Relationship between the Response line (Ying Yao) and the Self line: The Response line is another positioning method for the other party. Self and Response mutually generating each other offers an opening even when the useful god is temporarily merged. Self and Response clashing, combined with the useful god being merged, suggests the relationship is frozen in this period.
Whether the merging god has a sign of being clashed open: Look at the upcoming months and days and check whether the Earthly Branch of the merging god will be clashed. A clear future clash point gives a "wait and see" reference; no clear clash point in the near term suggests the entanglement will not dissolve soon.
Distinguish useful god entering its tomb from useful god being merged: The two are easy to confuse but are different in nature. Entering the tomb means the useful god itself is trapped in difficulty and cannot move. Being merged means the useful god is held by an outside force but is still alive. A merged useful god, once the merging god is clashed open or the merging god weakens, has a chance to become active again. A useful god in its tomb requires a tomb-clash (Chong Mu) before anything can change.
There is a traditional saying in Liu Yao relationship reading: "A useful god with no qi, merged and bound, even with feeling, meeting is hard to come by." This refers to the combined condition of a weak useful god that is also merged — both factors present at once makes reconciliation essentially a distant prospect. But if the useful god is prosperous and is only temporarily merged, and that merge can be broken open, the matter is still worth discussing.
So when you receive a chart where the useful god is merged, do not rush to a conclusion. First identify who the merging god is, then assess how strong the merging god is, then determine whether a clash-open point exists. Settle those three questions before giving your reading.
