What the Self Line and Response Line Each Represent in a Relocation Reading
When consulting Liu Yao about a potential move, the first step is understanding what each line position represents. The Self Line (Shi Yao) stands for the querent — the person who wants to move. In a relocation reading, the Response Line (Ying Yao) generally represents the destination, or whether the move itself will come to fruition. This correspondence is not fixed across all schools; some traditions read the Response Line as the other party, the new environment, or even an intermediary. For relocation queries, however, the mainstream approach treats the Response Line as "the place you are moving to" or as an indicator of whether the move will succeed.
A strong Self Line means the Self Line is supported by the month token or day token — in other words, the querent is in good form and has the drive to make the move happen. The Response Line generating the Self Line means the Response Line's Five Elements (Wu Xing) nature nourishes the Self Line, creating a relationship of "welcoming" — the new environment works in the querent's favor and offers support.
Having both in good shape is ideal, but in practice they rarely appear together in the same reading, which is why people debate which one carries more weight.
A Strong Self Line Alone Does Not Mean the Relocation Will Go Well
A strong, vigorous Self Line is a positive sign — it shows the querent has the capacity and momentum to make the move. But it only tells you that the person is ready; it does not tell you whether life will be good after the move.
An analogy: someone may be in excellent health, financially stable, and clear-headed about what they want, yet the place they plan to move to may have unfavorable Feng Shui, complicated interpersonal dynamics, or problems with the property itself. None of that is captured by the strength of the Self Line.
In Liu Yao logic, a strong Self Line primarily answers "do you have the ability to move?" — not "will things go well once you get there?" If the Response Line clashes with or overpowers the Self Line, or if the Response Line carries an unfavorable Six Relatives (Liu Qin) attribute, a strong Self Line will not prevent problems at the destination.
There is also a frequently overlooked scenario: the Self Line is strong but stationary, and no moving line in the hexagram drives a change toward relocation. This pattern often reads as "wanting to move but unable to" or "moving without meaningful change." Strength is not the same as movement, and in Liu Yao it is movement that signals change and development.
Why the Response Line Generating the Self Line Carries More Weight in Relocation Readings
For this specific type of question, the Response Line generating the Self Line deserves greater emphasis, because it expresses the destination's "receptiveness" toward the querent.
When the Response Line generates the Self Line, the energy of the new environment is favorable to the querent — moving there brings nourishment and support, and life and career are likely to improve. The direction of this relationship is outward-to-inward: the environment is reaching toward you rather than you forcing yourself to adapt.
The traditional logic behind reading relocation queries this way can be summarized as: "For relocation, consult the Response Line; the Response Line generating or combining with the Self Line is auspicious." The core reasoning is that moving is an act of deliberately changing your environment, so the environment's attitude toward you is what matters most. Your own condition is secondary; the quality of the new place is primary.
That said, a few details still require careful scrutiny when the Response Line generates the Self Line:
- Strength of the Response Line itself: if the Response Line generates the Self Line but is itself exhausted, resting, or extinguished, its generating force is weak and should not be taken at full value.
- Moving-line transformations: if the Response Line is a moving line, check the transformed line. If the transformed line clashes back against the Self Line, the initial generative relationship is diminished.
- Six Relatives attribute: the Six Relatives identity the Response Line carries also shapes the interpretation. For instance, if the Response Line holds the Guan Gui (Officer/Ghost) attribute and generates the Self Line, the support it brings may come bundled with pressure or constraint.
How to Read a Hexagram When Neither Condition Is Present
In practice, when the Self Line is not strong and the Response Line does not generate the Self Line, you cannot simply conclude that the move is inadvisable. Several other factors need examination.
The role of moving lines cannot be ignored. Sometimes a moving line in the hexagram transforms into a line that generates the Self Line, or the month and day tokens supply the Self Line with the qi it lacks. Liu Yao readings are never decided by one or two isolated conditions; the overall hexagram energy and the interplay of moving and static lines form the core of the analysis.
Beyond this, the Six Harmony (Liu He) and Six Clash (Liu Chong) hexagram types carry their own significance for relocation. A Six Clash hexagram generally signals instability after the move — short stays or frequent relocations. A Six Harmony hexagram leans toward cohesion and settling. This dimension sometimes speaks more directly than whether the Self Line is strong or weak.
Another angle worth considering: if the question is "should I move now or wait?" and the Self Line is resting but will enter its strong month soon, it may be worth advising the querent to wait until the Self Line comes into season. Similarly, if the Response Line currently clashes with the Self Line but the Five Elements shift next month, timing becomes critical. Liu Yao has a strong temporal dimension — a single reading taken at one moment should never be treated as a permanent verdict.
The strength of the Self Line and the Response Line generating the Self Line are not competing frameworks in a relocation reading; they address two different angles — your own condition versus the destination's attitude toward you. If a priority must be assigned, the Response Line generating the Self Line carries somewhat more weight for relocation specifically. Even so, drawing a conclusion from either one in isolation is a reliable path to a misread.
