Liu Yao Divination for Transactions: Does the Wealth Line Holding the Self Position or the Response Line Generating the Self Position Better Predict a Deal?

Wealth Line Holding Self and Response Line Generating Self: Different Starting Points

Many people learning Liu Yao for transaction divination start by memorizing formulas: Wealth Line holding Self is a great omen; Response Line generating Self means the deal is done. They memorize them just fine, but when it comes to actual reading they freeze — what do you do when both conditions appear at once? What if only one shows up?

To work through this, you need to separate the logic behind each pattern.

Wealth Line holding Self means the Wealth Line occupies the position of the Self Line. The Self Line represents the person asking the question; the Wealth Line represents money, goods, and — extended to transaction divination — the deal itself. Wealth Line holding Self, simply put, means you are directly tied to that money: the wealth sits on you, an image of funds already in hand.

Response Line generating Self operates on a different dimension. In transaction divination the Response Line represents the other party — buyer or seller, depending on which side you are on. Response Line generating Self means the other party's energy flows toward you; they have the intent and the motion to move in your direction. This is a relational image about the flow of energy between the two parties, not about you personally holding wealth.

So the two patterns start from different places: Wealth Line holding Self is an image of "I receive wealth," while Response Line generating Self is an image of "the other party comes to meet me."

Which One Carries More Weight in Transaction Divination

In practical readings, I lean toward weighing Response Line generating Self slightly more heavily. The reason is simple: the most critical variable in whether a deal closes is the other party.

No matter how strong your own desire to close, if the other side does not move, nothing happens. Response Line generating Self indicates that the other party is actively approaching and has the will to cooperate — that is the direct driving force behind a deal materializing. Among traditional practitioners there is a saying: when the Response generates Self, the buyer will come asking. That "coming to ask" is the prerequisite for any deal.

Wealth Line holding Self is certainly a good omen, but it speaks more to your personal affinity with money and the state of your own financial fortune — it does not necessarily mean this specific transaction will close. Sometimes Wealth Line holding Self is paired with Response Line clashing Self, and the other party turns out to be critical, price-pressuring, or ultimately backing out. That deal may not go smoothly at all.

Of course, when both conditions are met — Wealth Line holding Self and Response Line generating Self simultaneously — that is indeed one of the more ideal patterns in transaction divination. The likelihood of closing is high, and typically the price or terms will favor the querent.

When only Wealth Line holds Self but the Response Line does not generate Self, or even clashes Self, I generally read it this way: wealth is accessible, but there are obstacles in the process. You may need to take the initiative, or the money may not come from this particular counterparty — switching to a different buyer or seller might actually go more smoothly.

When only the Response Line generates Self but the Wealth Line does not hold Self, the other party genuinely has interest, but how much you can actually receive, and whether the terms are favorable, requires a further look at where the Wealth Line falls, whether it is active, and whether it is prosperous or depleted.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake one: assuming Wealth Line holding Self guarantees a closed deal.

Holding Self only indicates that your connection to wealth is close; it does not mean the transaction itself is free of obstacles. You still need to check whether the Officer Line (the signal for resistance, disputes, or the other party reversing course) is clashing Self, the structural pattern of the hexagram for six-clashes or six-combinations, and whether the yong shen (useful god) is prosperous or depleted. If the Wealth Line holds Self but is in the tomb, extinction, or void, the Wealth Line occupies the Self position but carries no power of its own — the prospect of closing becomes doubtful.

Mistake two: assuming Response Line generating Self means the other party is genuinely sincere.

Response Line generating Self indicates the other party has the motion and intent to approach, but intent does not equal final commitment. If the Response Line itself is a moving line that transforms into a line clashing Self, or if Response Line generates Self within a six-clash hexagram, traditional interpretation holds that this is "hollow affection coming near" — seemingly close, but the negotiation may fall apart or the party may change course midway.

Mistake three: looking at only one or two lines without reading the full hexagram.

This is the most widespread problem among beginners. Liu Yao interpretation demands a holistic view: the sheng-ke (generating-overcoming) relationship of the day-pillar and month-pillar to the yong shen, the influence of moving and transformed lines, and the condition of hidden lines all need to be factored in together. Reaching a conclusion from "Wealth Line holds Self" or "Response Line generates Self" alone is prone to error.

One more point worth noting separately: the relative weight of these two patterns can differ by transaction type. In a large-scale commercial contract negotiation, the other party's stance (Response Line) matters more than your own financial fortune (Wealth Line holding Self); in a small personal transaction, whether the Wealth Line is prosperous directly reflects the outcome more immediately. There is no fixed formula for this ratio — it comes down to experiential judgment.

How to Apply This When You Cast a Hexagram

On the practical side, when divining a trade or transaction I suggest confirming a few things first:

  • What is the Five Elements (Wu Xing) nature of the Self Line, and which position does it occupy?
  • Which line does the Wealth Line fall on, is it a moving line, and is it prosperous or depleted?
  • What is the Five Elements nature of the Response Line, and what is its generating-overcoming relationship with the Self Line?
  • What is the clashing, combining, supporting, or overcoming effect of the day-branch and month-pillar on the Wealth Line and Response Line?

The assessment of Wealth Line holding Self must include the Wealth Line's own strength and vitality — only a prosperous and active Wealth Line holding Self is a genuinely solid good omen. For Response Line generating Self, confirm whether the Response Line is a stable resting line, and if it is a moving line, check whether the transformed line still generates Self after transformation.

There is also a line in the traditional formulas that often gets overlooked: "Wealth Line holding Self fears the Sibling Line." The Sibling Line (xiong di yao) in transaction divination represents competitors and also carries the meaning of dispersing wealth. Even with Wealth Line holding Self, if the Sibling Line is prosperous and moving throughout the hexagram, it signals fierce competition from peers or the risk of a third party interfering and collapsing the deal.

So the final reading logic works roughly like this: Response Line generating Self is one sufficient condition for a deal closing; Wealth Line holding Self is one sufficient condition for receiving wealth. Having both is ideal. When forced to choose one, Response Line generating Self gives a more direct answer to the question "can this deal close?" But no single pattern standing alone can lead to a conclusion independent of the full hexagram.
