Liu Yao Divination for Debt Recovery: Which Is Better — Wealth Yao Holding the Self Position, or Response Yao Generating the Self?

Clarifying the Two Concepts First

Many people cast a hexagram about debt recovery, see the Wealth Yao in a strong state and feel encouraged, or spot the Response Yao generating the Self and assume things are settled. In reality these two signs describe entirely different things, and comparing them side by side without distinction leads to inaccurate readings.

Wealth Yao holding the Self position means the Self Yao itself is the Wealth Yao. In other words, the querent (represented by the Self Yao) is directly linked to the nature of the money — the wealth sits at one's own position.

Response Yao generating the Self means the other party (the Response Yao represents the debtor) is directing its energy to support the Self Yao. The "generating" here refers to the Five Elements (Wu Xing) production cycle: if the Response Yao is Wood and the Self Yao is Fire, Wood feeds Fire — that is the Response Yao generating the Self.

The two operate from different angles. The first asks, "Is the money in my hands?" The second asks, "Is the other party willing to cooperate?" Recovering a debt requires both the money to be in good shape and the other party to act, so pulling either sign out in isolation and asking which one is "better for recovery" is itself a question that needs unpacking.

What Wealth Yao Holding the Self Position Actually Means

Wealth Yao holding the Self position is, in classical reading, one of the favorable signs for money-related hexagrams. The Zeng Shan Bu Yi (Augmented and Revised Divination Classic) notes in its discussion of wealth hexagrams that when the Wealth Yao holds the Self position, wealth and property come easily. But there is an unstated prerequisite: the Wealth Yao itself must be prosperous and strong (wang xiang), and must not fall into emptiness (kong wang), clash (chong), or subjugation (ke).

Wealth Yao holding the Self position but falling into emptiness (kong wang) actually suggests the money is nominally yours yet practically out of reach. Emptiness is a bit like "belongs to me in name, but suspended in reality." This pattern comes up often in debt hexagrams — the borrower may genuinely owe the money, but the person is untraceable or the funds have already disappeared.

Wealth Yao holding the Self position and encountering a clash or subjugation from the day or month is also problematic. Say the Wealth Yao in the hexagram belongs to Wood, and the casting day is a Geng Shen (Metal) day — Metal overrides Wood, the Self Yao is suppressed, and even though the money is yours, recovery at that moment is blocked. This pattern may require waiting for a period when Metal wanes or Wood strengthens.

The smoothest state for Wealth Yao holding the Self is: Wealth Yao prosperous and strong, supported by the day or month, and free from emptiness, clash, punishment (xing), or harm (hai). In that configuration, calling the debt recoverable is well-founded.

One more scenario worth addressing separately: Wealth Yao holding the Self with the Guan Gui Yao (Officer Ghost Yao, representing constraint and litigation) also strong, and the Response Yao weak — this pattern suggests legal channels may be needed to recover the money; private negotiation alone will likely fall short.

What Response Yao Generating the Self Can Tell You

Response Yao generating the Self centers on "the other party actively cooperating." The Response Yao represents the debtor; when it generates the Self Yao, the other party's energy is working in your favor rather than against you.

One detail deserves close attention here: Response Yao generating the Self does not mean the other party has the money. Response Yao prosperous and strong while generating the Self, combined with the Wealth Yao also in good condition — that is the genuinely favorable configuration. Response Yao prosperous and strong while generating the Self, but the Wealth Yao dormant (xiu xiu) or empty, may mean the other party sincerely intends to repay but temporarily lacks the means, or the funds have been transferred elsewhere.

It also matters whether the Response Yao is moving or still. Response Yao still and generating the Self indicates a steady, quiet cooperation — the other party will not come to you proactively, but will not put up major resistance when pressed. Response Yao moving and generating the Self suggests the other party may reach out on their own initiative, or that the situation is developing in a forward direction.

Conversely, if the Response Yao overrides the Self (ke shi), or the Response Yao is strong while the Self Yao is dormant, caution is warranted — the other party's stance is forceful, possibly digging in or stalling. Simply waiting in that case accomplishes little.

Reading the Two Patterns Together

In practice when casting a hexagram about debt, Wealth Yao holding the Self and Response Yao generating the Self are not mutually exclusive. Sometimes one hexagram carries both; sometimes neither.

Both present: Wealth Yao holds the Self and is strong; Response Yao generates the Self and is moving. This is among the more favorable combinations in a debt hexagram, indicating the money is in good shape and the other party is cooperating. Recovery probability is broadly favorable, though emptiness, clash, and punishment must still be checked for anything that could break the pattern.

Only Wealth Yao holding the Self, with Response Yao overriding the Self or Response Yao weak: The money is theoretically yours, but the other party is not cooperating. This pattern typically calls for outside leverage — a guarantor, legal action, or waiting for the right timing to apply pressure.

Only Response Yao generating the Self, with Wealth Yao not in good condition: The other party has the intent, but execution faces obstacles. The debtor may be cash-strapped, or the funds may have already been taken by another creditor. Pressing too hard here risks souring the relationship.

Neither condition met: Self Yao weak, Wealth Yao dormant, Response Yao overriding the Self. This hexagram generally points to short-term unrecoverability — not that recovery is impossible, but that current timing is wrong and a shift in the situation is needed.

So if forced to rank the two, the personal read is: Wealth Yao holding the Self is closer to a "result condition," while Response Yao generating the Self is closer to a "process condition." The former determines whether the money ultimately arrives; the latter shapes how smoothly the pursuit goes. Both need to be examined for a debt reading; missing either leaves the picture incomplete.

Using the strength or weakness (wang shuai), movement or stillness (dong jing), and emptiness or clash of each Yao as calibrating factors, then combining the state of these two key Yaos for an integrated reading, is the more grounded approach to Liu Yao money hexagrams. Drawing a conclusion from a single favorable sign in isolation is the most common mistake beginners make.
