The Role of the Siblings Line
In the Liu Yao system, the Self Position (Shi Yao) represents the person consulting the oracle. Among the Six Relatives (Liu Qin), the Siblings Line (Xiong Di Yao) carries the basic symbolic meaning of peers, equals, and competitors. In wealth-related readings, it holds one particularly important attribute: it restrains wealth. The Wealth Line is the Wife-Wealth Line (Qi Cai Yao), and the Siblings Line's Five Elements (Wu Xing) overcomes the Wife-Wealth Line — so whenever the Siblings Line is active and strong in a wealth reading, it is rarely a good sign.
When consulting about a business partnership, the core questions are: can this venture turn a profit, and can the partner be trusted? Both questions revolve around money, so the condition of the Wealth Line is the first thing to examine. With the Siblings Line holding the Self Position, the person consulting effectively enters the reading already carrying the Five Elements attribute that "restrains wealth" — this is one layer of inherent concern baked into the reading from the start.
That said, the Self Position line is only a starting point; no conclusion should rest on it alone. Whether the Wealth Line has roots, the condition of the Officer-Ghost Line (Guan Gui Yao), and the state of the Response Position (Ying Yao) — which represents the partner — all need to be examined together. Still, the Siblings Line holding the Self Position is an initial signal that deserves serious attention.
What the Siblings Line at the Self Position Specifically Indicates in Partnership Readings
The likelihood of wealth being divided and depleted is high. When the Siblings Line holds the Self Position and other lines in the reading also show Siblings Lines — especially moving ones — the pressure on the Wealth Line intensifies. A folk reading principle holds: when Siblings Lines appear in multiples, wealth does not accumulate. Applied to partnerships, this means not just that money is hard to earn, but more likely that money comes in and cannot be retained — it leaks out through expenses, profits get diluted, or losses arise from unclear accounts between partners.
Disputes between partners arise easily. The Siblings Line symbolizes peer relationships and competition. Holding the Self Position means the consulting party and the partner are operating in an energy that is equal or even adversarial, making it hard to settle disagreements over profit distribution. I have seen several readings of this type where the person later reported that within a short time after starting the partnership, both sides began feeling the other was contributing less and taking more, ultimately going their separate ways. This is not necessarily a question of anyone's character — the structure of the partnership itself tends to generate friction.
The consulting party may themselves become a point of wealth leakage. This is somewhat uncomfortable to say, but it is worth raising. The Siblings Line at the Self Position sometimes reflects the consulting party's own role within the partnership — not as the one drawing wealth in, but as the one distributing it outward. Sometimes this stems from personality (a tendency toward generosity, impulsive spending, or weak bookkeeping); sometimes it comes from position (being responsible for the highest-cost part of the operation). This layer requires careful differentiation using the day and month pillars alongside moving lines — no sweeping generalization applies.
The condition of the Officer-Ghost Line is critical. In commercial readings, the Officer-Ghost Line represents pressure, obstacles, but also constraint and regulation. If the Siblings Line holds the Self Position while the Officer-Ghost Line is strong and prosperous (Wang Xiang), the venture may also face external trouble: market pressure, competitors, policy risk, or even legal disputes. Two negative signals stacking together makes it very difficult to feel optimistic about such a reading.
Conversely, if the Officer-Ghost Line is quiet and the Wealth Line has roots — for instance, it is entering a storage phase (Ru Mu) but can be activated by a clash, or it appears at the day pillar — the destructive force of the Siblings Line at the Self Position is somewhat weakened. The risk remains, but the timeline may simply be longer.
Assessing the Response Position and the Partner
The Response Position represents the other party — the partner. Examining whether the partnership can last means the relationship between the Self and Response Positions is a primary focus.
With the Siblings Line at the Self Position, if the Response Position carries the Wife-Wealth Line, the Self overcomes the Response in Five Elements terms, meaning the consulting party exerts a suppressing influence on the partner. This kind of relationship tends to be one where the consulting party leads and the partner follows. In the short term this may cause no problems, but over time the partner is likely to grow resentful, feeling that their contributions go unrecognized.
If the Response Position also carries the Siblings Line, both parties stand on the same Five Elements footing, making it even harder to draw clean lines around profit-sharing, and the probability of disputes rises further. A common scenario: two friends start a business together, everything feels fine at the outset, but once money is either made or lost, the accounts cannot be untangled and the friendship ends with it. This kind of reading shows up frequently in such situations.
If the Response Position carries the Children Line (Zi Sun Yao), things are relatively more favorable — the Children Line restrains the Officer-Ghost Line, suggesting fewer obstacles and a freer environment. However, the Children Line does not generate wealth; it represents ease, not profit. Such a reading may mean the collaboration feels pleasant but the financial returns are not what was hoped for.
A Response Position carrying the Officer-Ghost Line warrants particular caution. The Officer-Ghost restrains the Self, meaning the partner holds a suppressive position over the consulting party. The consulting party is likely to be in a passive role within this partnership, or the partner may themselves be a source of trouble.
Details Easy to Overlook When Reading the Divination
The Siblings Line holding the Self Position without moving is a different intensity than the Siblings Line holding the Self Position and moving. When it holds but does not move, the problem is latent; when it moves, the hidden risk will manifest around the time of the reading.
The sheng and ke (generating and overcoming) relationships with the day and month pillars also shift the interpretation. If the month pillar (Yue Jian) is a Wife-Wealth Line, the Wealth Line receives support from the monthly pillar, and the restraining force is softened, reducing the overall risk level of the reading. Conversely, if the month pillar is also a Siblings Line, the Wealth Line faces double suppression from both the Self Position and the monthly pillar, making the risk of dried-up income far more pressing.
Kong Wang (emptiness and void) is another variable. If the Wealth Line enters emptiness, it does not mean wealth is entirely absent — it means the manifestation of wealth is postponed to the period after emptiness passes. But if the Siblings Line holds the Self Position while the Wealth Line is simultaneously in emptiness, there is very little prospect of meaningful financial progress in the near term; pushing forward with the business may just be spinning wheels.
Traditional Liu Yao practice holds that "one moving line transforms the entire reading" — the Five Elements attributes of the transformed line introduce new sheng-ke dynamics, and this part requires case-by-case analysis with no universal formula.
A piece of folk experience holds: when the Siblings Line holds the Self Position in a wealth reading, if the Children Line within the reading is prosperous and unharmed, there is still a chance for things to turn around even if wealth is hard to accumulate; but if the Children Line is also entering storage or being overcome, the path to wealth is essentially closed, and the person should be advised to proceed with great caution. There is real merit in this observation, though I do not think it should be applied mechanically — the specific structure of each reading varies considerably.
Decisions about business partnerships are inherently complex, and Liu Yao is only one reference point among many. The Siblings Line holding the Self Position is a signal worth pausing over seriously. Its core message is this: the flow of wealth in this partnership may not move in the direction one expects; the tension over interests between partners should be discussed openly in advance; and the clearer the boundaries around accounts and responsibilities are drawn early, the better.
