When the Wealth Line Holds the Self Position — Does That Mean Money Is in Your Hands?
Many people cast a Liu Yao hexagram to ask about opening a store, and the moment they see the Wealth Line (cai yao) holding the Self position (shi yao), they feel the reading looks promising — the Wealth Line is on the Self position, so money naturally flows to them. That reasoning is not wrong, but it only tells half the story.
The core meaning of the Wealth Line holding the Self position is that the person asking the question is deeply bound up with the matter of "wealth." In a store-opening reading, the Wealth Line represents direct business income and the shop's cash flow. When it holds the Self position, it indicates that the situation itself holds strong financial appeal for the querent — or that the querent has the subjective conditions to attract wealth.
But there is one thing about this pattern that people often overlook. When the Wealth Line holds the Self position, the Officer Line (guan gui yao) tends to become the relative that restrains the Self. In Liu Yao, the Wealth Line and the Officer Line have a generating-and-restraining relationship: wealth generates the officer, and the officer restrains the self. If the Officer Line is strong and active when the Wealth Line holds the Self position, the pressure on the Self position becomes quite pronounced. In a business reading, this typically signals operational resistance, competitive pressure, or even legal disputes. So do not get excited the moment you see the Wealth Line holding the Self position — first check where the Officer Line sits, whether it is moving, and how strong it is.
Another situation worth watching is when the Wealth Line holds the Self position but is void (kong wang) or entombed (ru mu). A void Wealth Line on the Self position looks like there is money, but during the relevant period the wealth is illusory — the shop may look presentable in its early days yet bring in limited income. Entombment is more troublesome: the wealth is locked away and cannot circulate in the short term.
The ideal state for the Wealth Line holding the Self position is: the Wealth Line prosperous and robust, supported by the day or month, free from restraint or clashing, and the Officer Line quiet and unmoved. Only then can you truly speak of "wealth in my hands."
The Response Line Generating the Self Position — What Is the Logic Here?
In Liu Yao, the Response Line (ying yao) represents the other party. In a store-opening reading, it usually corresponds to customers, partners, or the market environment — and sometimes to the location of the shop or its surrounding ecosystem.
The Response Line generating the Self position literally means "the other party nourishes me." Applied to opening a store, this can be understood as: external conditions favor you, customers are willing to come, the market accepts you, and the location energizes you. This is a pattern of passive benefit — not you going out to seize the market, but the market coming to find you.
This pattern carries particular reference value in certain industries. For location-driven businesses — convenience stores, breakfast stalls, neighborhood mini-markets — location and foot traffic account for roughly seventy percent of survival. When the Response Line generates the Self position, it suggests that the chosen spot itself has a natural customer-flow advantage.
But the Response Line generating the Self position has its limits. It speaks to favorable external conditions; it does not mean your own operational ability is sufficient. If the Self position is weak in itself, even the energy the Response Line sends over may not be enough to prop it up — just as a great location cannot save a business run by someone disorganized and undercapitalized.
One more thing worth noting: in a hexagram where the Response Line generates the Self position, if the Response Line moves and transforms into a restraining line, that is a pattern of initial promise followed by decline. The start looks fine, but the market environment later turns against you, or a partner reverses course. Such dynamic transformations require careful scrutiny — you cannot simply fix your eyes on the words "generating the Self."
How Do the Two Patterns Compare When Placed Side by Side?
Saying outright which one is "more favorable for running a business" is a bit too simplified. The two patterns approach the question from different angles: one speaks to the querent's own wealth-fortune condition, the other speaks to how much external conditions support the querent. They are not on the same dimension and cannot be directly compared.
If a directional judgment is needed: for someone opening a store for the first time with limited resources who relies mainly on organic foot traffic, the Response Line generating the Self position may more directly reflect whether the business can actually work — because it speaks to whether the market and environment give you a chance.
For someone with accumulated experience, strong proactive customer-acquisition ability, and a targeted marketing approach, the Wealth Line holding the Self position is more telling — it reflects your own control over wealth.
Of course, the ideal hexagram has both patterns present simultaneously, or the two working in concert. For example, when the Wealth Line holds the Self position and the Response Line also moves to generate the Self position, this counts as a double positive in the reading — both internal and external conditions are aligned.
In practical readings, looking at any single line's condition is rarely enough. You also need to examine:
- The strength or weakness of the Self position itself — it is the foundation, and any favorable pattern loses its force when the foundation is weak.
- The condition of the useful spirit (yong shen) — in a store-opening reading, the Wealth Line is typically the useful spirit — whether it is prosperous or declining, active or still, void or entombed.
- The condition of the Parent Line (fu mu yao) — the Parent Line represents contracts, the premises, and the business license. If the Parent Line is restrained or moves to restrain the Self, there may be trouble with the opening procedures or the physical space.
- The generating, restraining, clashing, and combining relationships between the day, month, and each line — these determine whether the timing is ripe.
One very common misreading is this: seeing the Wealth Line hold the Self position or the Response Line generate the Self position and immediately concluding "you can open" — while completely ignoring the state of every other line. Reading a Liu Yao hexagram is inherently holistic, like a financial statement: you cannot look only at revenue while ignoring liabilities.
Practical Notes for Casting the Hexagram
When asking about opening a store, the more specific the question, the more useful the reading. A vague question like "can I do business?" produces a hexagram that is difficult to interpret because the direction is undefined. Replacing it with something like "I am planning to open a restaurant at a certain location — is it suitable to open within this year?" gives a clear direction, and the correspondence between the hexagram and the actual situation is far more precise.
Timing also matters. Liu Yao predictions carry a time frame; the expected period is usually referenced from the moving lines in the hexagram, ranging from a year at the longest to a month or even a day at the shortest. If the favorable pattern corresponds to a period that falls before your funding is in place, that pattern has limited bearing on your current decision.
Finally, casting the hexagram repeatedly for the same question is not a good idea. Traditional Liu Yao practice requires a certain interval between questions on the same matter. Asking again and again usually happens because the hexagram did not come out the way one hoped — and readings done under those conditions tend to be muddled. The better approach is to cast once, read it carefully, consult someone experienced if anything is unclear, and resist shaking coins until you land on a result you like.
