First, Clarify Who the Self Yao and Response Yao Represent
In a Liu Yao reading for a breach-of-contract dispute, the person casting the reading is represented by the Self Yao, and the opposing party is represented by the Response Yao. Nearly every introductory Liu Yao text covers this, yet a common error creeps in during practice: some people are asking "Will the other party breach the contract?" while others are asking "Can I win this lawsuit?" These are different questions with different interpretive emphases.
The first focuses on the other party's intentions and behavior; the second focuses on the querent's own ultimate gains and losses. This article centers on the scenario where a breach-of-contract dispute has already arisen, and the question is: how do the two sides compare in strength, and where does the querent stand?
When the Self Yao overcomes the Response Yao, it literally means the querent subdues the other party — the querent is strong and the other party is weak. When the Response Yao overcomes the Self Yao, the reverse is true: the other party's force suppresses the querent. Many people hear "overcomes" and assume it means something harmful, but in Liu Yao the overcoming side is generally the stronger party in the balance of power.
Response Yao Overcomes Self Yao: You Are on the Defensive, but That Does Not Mean You Lose
When the Response Yao overcomes the Self Yao, the intuitive reading is that the other party carries more momentum and the querent is being suppressed. In a breach-of-contract dispute, this typically means:
- The other party holds more initiative — for instance, the contract terms already favor them, or they control more of the evidence.
- The other party is taking a hard line and is unlikely to negotiate easily.
- The querent feels psychological pressure and may make concessions at the negotiating table.
The critical question, however, is whether the Self Yao has qi (vital force). If the Self Yao is wang (prosperous) or xiang (rising) — meaning it is seasonally strong — it can withstand the Response Yao's pressure even while being overcome: "overcome yet unmoved." If the Self Yao is in xiu (dormant) or qiu (weakened) and is simultaneously being overcome by the Response Yao, then the querent is genuinely being beaten down.
The day stem (ri jian) and monthly branch (yue ling) are the core reference points for assessing vigor and weakness. Drawing conclusions without examining these two is the most common mistake in Liu Yao divination.
Self Yao Overcomes Response Yao: You Have the Upper Hand, but the Outcome Is Not Yet Settled
When the Self Yao overcomes the Response Yao, it means the querent is stronger than the other party. In a breach-of-contract context, this generally indicates:
- The querent is in a favorable position in the dispute.
- The other party lacks confidence and may take the initiative to compromise.
- If the matter goes to court, the querent's odds are relatively better.
Here, too, the vitality of the Response Yao must be examined. If the Response Yao is prosperous or rising, the other party still has resistance even while being overcome, and the matter may not resolve smoothly. If the Response Yao enters mu (entombment), kong wang (void and absent), or is in a weakened state and is also being overcome by the Self Yao, the other party is essentially in a state of collapse.
One situation that is easy to overlook: the Self Yao overcomes the Response Yao, but a moving line comes to generate the Response Yao — meaning a third party is effectively backing up the other side. The surface reading is that you are strong, but the actual situation may reverse. The intervention of moving lines often determines the final outcome more than the static overcoming relationship between Self and Response ever could.
Which Is More Serious Depends on Whose Perspective You Are Asking From
Back to the original question: between Response Yao overcoming Self Yao and Self Yao overcoming Response Yao, which is more serious for the querent?
If "more serious" means the querent's own situation is more unfavorable, then the Response Yao overcoming the Self Yao is obviously more uncomfortable — you are the one being overcome. But if the question is "which configuration makes the breach dispute harder to resolve or more likely to escalate," the answer is not necessarily that Response overcomes Self.
When the Self Yao overcomes the Response Yao and the other party is suppressed, this can paradoxically provoke a cornered reaction — breaking everything in desperation, which in turn rigidifies the situation. There are many classical examples in the divinatory record of a querent holding the stronger position yet ending up in litigation because the other party refused to comply.
In the Response-overcomes-Self configuration, the other party holds the advantage, but if the Response Yao is simultaneously struck or clashed by the day stem and month branch, the other party is outwardly strong and inwardly hollow — they may lack the actual capacity to perform the contract even if its terms strongly favor them. In that situation, who overcomes whom becomes almost secondary.
A practical principle among traditional diviners: in breach-of-contract readings, the Self-Response overcoming relationship is only the first step. The next step is to examine the condition of the wealth line (cai yao), which represents money and the subject matter at stake, and to check whether the Officer-Ghost line (guan gui yao), representing legal authority and binding force, is strong. If the Officer-Ghost line is vigorous and moving, the matter will enter legal proceedings. If it is weak or in void, the dispute will likely be resolved privately — or the losses simply cannot be recovered.
Practical Assessment of Several Common Configurations
Response overcomes Self; Self Yao is prosperous or rising; Officer-Ghost line is strong: Although the querent is suppressed, the querent's foundation is solid and the law favors them. This dispute is worth fighting — the outcome should not be too bad.
Response overcomes Self; Self Yao is weakened; wealth line enters entombment: The querent's situation is genuinely passive, and the money is very likely unrecoverable. In this configuration it is worth calculating the cost carefully — if a private settlement is possible, that is preferable to grinding through a process that drains even more.
Self overcomes Response; Response Yao is prosperous or rising; moving line generates Response: On the surface the querent is strong, but the other party has backing. Do not underestimate the opposition; leaving room in negotiations is the steadier approach.
Self overcomes Response; Response Yao is in void: Void has two readings: the other party is temporarily absent (the person is unreachable, the funds are not in place), or the matter is hollow on the surface and the other party was never truly capable of breaching in a meaningful way. The specific line image must be examined — no blanket conclusion applies.
In Liu Yao reading, the Self-Response relationship is the frame; the vigor, movement, and stillness of the lines are the flesh. Either one alone is half a picture. Asking in the abstract whether "Response overcomes Self" or "Self overcomes Response" is more serious will always yield the answer "it depends on the specific hexagram" — and that is not a deflection. It is simply how Liu Yao works.
