Liu Yao Love Readings: What Do Wealth Line and Officer Line Holding the Self Mean?

What Is the Self Line and Why Does It Matter

When casting a hexagram to ask about romance, the first thing to examine is which position the Self line (Shi Yao) occupies and which of the six relations it carries. The Self line represents the person asking the question, and its relational attribute — Wealth, Officer, Sibling, Parent, Child, or Ghost — directly reflects that person's current state and circumstances within the relationship.

The Wealth line and Officer line hold a special place in love readings. Traditionally, a man asking about romance uses the Wealth line as the star of wife and concubine, while a woman uses the Officer line as her husband star. When either of these lines appears in the Self position, it carries a strong romantic signal — but reading it accurately goes well beyond saying "Wealth line holding Self is auspicious" or "Officer line holding Self means a relationship is present."

Wealth Line Holding Self: The Meaning Differs Sharply by Gender

When a man casts a hexagram and the Wealth line holds the Self position, it colloquially means "the wife star sits on oneself." Traditional interpretation generally treats this as a favorable sign — romantic affinity is present, the other person weighs heavily on the querent's heart, and there may even be a sense of active pursuit. If the Wealth line is prosperous and receives the support of the day or month stem, it further suggests a smooth relationship with strong mutual attraction.

The gap between prosperity and weakness cannot be ignored, however. If the Wealth line holds Self but is in a resting or imprisoned state, or is overcome or harmed by the day stem or a moving line, the picture is less encouraging. This more often reflects a state of "wanting but unable to obtain," or a draining dynamic between the two parties. A Wealth line that falls into void (kong wang) deserves particular attention — it points to clinging to a relationship that is empty or not yet formed, with limited real-world progress.

For a woman casting a hexagram, the Wealth line holding Self carries an entirely different quality. A woman's husband star is the Officer line; the Wealth line, in her chart, is what traditionally generates the Child line and also overcomes the Officer line. Classical interpretation holds that when a woman's Wealth line holds Self in a love reading, it may at minimum suggest a rival (since Wealth overcomes Officer, hinting at obstacles to marriage), and at a deeper level it may reflect the querent herself being overly aggressive or dominant in the relationship, suppressing the strength of the husband star.

Personally, I think this reading has some merit but should not be applied mechanically. A woman with Wealth line holding Self is not necessarily "dominant" in real life — more often it simply reflects a certain tilt in the relational dynamic at the time of the reading, not a fixed verdict. Reading it alongside the Response line (Ying Yao) and the useful god (yong shen) is far more accurate than stopping at the Self line alone.

A few details worth particular attention:

  • If the Wealth line holding Self is also monthly-broken or in a void period, expectations around the relationship tend to come to nothing.
  • When the Self holds the Wealth line and the Response line carries the Officer line, for a man this signals that the other party has feelings and the connection is fairly concrete.
  • When the Self holds the Wealth line and the Response line also carries a Wealth line — two Wealth lines appearing together — classical readings speak of "two wife-wealth lines present," hinting at an entangled romantic situation; the specific hexagram must be examined to judge further.

Officer Line Holding Self: Not Inauspicious — It Depends Who Is Asking

Many people feel uneasy the moment they see the word "ghost" (gui) in Officer-Ghost line. In Liu Yao, the Officer line's name does carry a slightly shadowy ring, but in love readings it is an entirely different matter.

When a woman asks about romance and the Officer line holds her Self position, it is equivalent to "the husband star landing on oneself." This is a powerful signal in a love reading, indicating that the querent is emotionally engaged or has already formed a deep bond with someone. If the Officer line is prosperous and vital, it is generally a good omen that the relationship is settling into stability.

That said, Officer line holding Self is not unconditionally auspicious for a woman. If the Officer line is excessively strong and repeatedly reinforced by day, month, and moving lines, it can sometimes instead reflect emotional obsession or pressure — caring too much about a relationship and swinging between anxiety and clinging. If the Officer line holding Self is also accompanied by Bai Hu (White Tiger), traditional readings will add a note about "arguments and gossip," which I would not over-interpret, though friction in the relationship is a real possibility.

For a man asking about romance, the Officer line holding Self needs to be read by context. If the question touches on career and only incidentally involves romance, a prosperous Officer line holding Self is a positive signal. But in a pure relationship or marriage inquiry, some interpretive lineages treat a man's Officer line holding Self as "official trouble entering the body" or a sense of constraint in the relationship — suggesting this bond makes him feel pressured or conflicted. This reading is not definitive; treat it as a reference direction, not a conclusion.

One scenario worth singling out: a man casts a hexagram, the Officer line holds Self, but the Response line carries the Wealth line. Here the Officer and Wealth lines create a kind of tension. Some readings would say "the Self has reservations, but the other party has feelings." The real-life correspondence might be: the other person likes him, but he himself is held back by certain circumstances — family pressure, practical obstacles — and is reluctant or unable to move forward.

The Self Line's Six-Relation Is a Starting Point, Not an Answer

Looking at which six-relation the Self line carries is the first step in a Liu Yao love reading — not the last. Many beginners stop here, concluding that Wealth line holding Self must mean a relationship is guaranteed or that Officer line holding Self is always good. That is a mistake.

The useful god's condition must be checked. In love readings, whether the useful god — Wealth line for a man's inquiry, Officer line for a woman's — is vital, is being overcome, or falls into void is the core basis for judging the direction of the relationship. The useful god holding Self simply means the two are merged in one place; the line still needs to be assessed for its own strength.

The Response line must be checked. The Response line represents the other person — their six-relation attribute, their strength or weakness, and their generating or overcoming relationship with the Self line directly speak to the quality of the interaction between the two. Self prosperous and Response weak may mean the querent is investing more; Self and Response harmonizing or mutually generating each other is the pattern of mutual feeling.

Moving lines and transformed lines are variables. Moving lines in a hexagram typically represent external factors or internal changes affecting how the relationship develops and cannot be ignored. Sometimes the Self-with-Wealth pattern looks solid but a moving line transforms into an Officer that clashes the Response line — indicating obstacles along the way, and no conclusion should be drawn from the Self line alone.

Liu Yao love readings are fundamentally about using a set of symbolic structures to describe the present state of a relationship, not about prophesying an unchangeable fate. Whether it is Wealth line holding Self or Officer line holding Self, these offer an observational angle. For the real answer, you have to go back into the hexagram as a whole.
